Oddball-o-rama contest entry Douglas D-558

I just started cutting and colouring in the edges over the weekend (no pictures yet) I am hoping to have enough spare time this week to put it all together.

This will be a strait-up build from the pdf file- no changes in scale or any additional things like a cockpit interior. At 1/35th, this model is turning out bigger than I first thought it would be! And its got largish wing fillets, which are always the bane of my existence. But who knows; maybe this time I will be able to make them come out right.

Cool! Can't wait to see how yours comes out! When I did the beta, it came out great. Hope the same result comes out for yours!

Thanks.

Last night my kids were hogging the computer so I retreated to my D-588 build. All the major parts are now glued up. All that is left is the canopy (which is simply placed on the model in the photos for reference), the wing fillets, and the landing gear.

So far this has been a very enjoyable build, with the only problems being of my own creation. Hopefully I will get a free hour or so tonight to finish up.

Looks pretty good. Way better than I could ever build it.

Tanks! The red I was using on the edges is maybe a bit dark; its making the edges stand out a bit too much. If I build it again I would try to use a lighter colour for the edges. And some kind of glossy paper. Looking at pictures of the D-558 on the internet makes me realize it was realllly shiny!

Once I am done and taken some final pictures, I may see if giving it the old floorwax treatment will work.

You know, I can't help thinking that an all white version would be dead easy to make up...hint hint. :-)

I've got a serious backlog of models already that I have to get out. I'm putting a pause on designing new ones until I can get the backlog taken care of. But I'll look into the white version. Should save on ink anyways.

Well, I finaly got some time to spare today to finish up the D-558. Here she is in all her red splendor. The only thing I added myself was the pitot tubes on each wing, and no that I am looking at them, they look way to thick. I will probably swap them out for something thinner and a bit longer. I had my usual issues with the wing fillets, but I expected that. And somehow I must have messed up the gear, because once it was done the nose gear was too short and the model had a distinct nose down look. I had to re-do the nose gear to make it longer.

Chris will have to let me know if these pictures are OK, or if I need to take more.
