OTDAEABT 2 - Maly Modelarz Tiger I Ausf H1 4-5/98
Just to get the thread started.....
The model consists of: - About 2 pages of diagrams which is pretty thin for a complex model. - 2 pages of Polish instructions. - 2 pages of 80gsm with frame parts. - 7 pages of parts printed on (about) 180gsm card. - 2 pages of 80 gsm roadwheels that have to glued to 0.5 and 1mm card. - 1 page of 80 gsm which is laminated to "Bristol" (200 gsm) for most of the track elements. The printing is accurate with none of the registration and colour bleed problems of older Modelarz kits. The colour of model is a uniform dull yellow-orange colour - there's no attempt to represent the green and dark red camouflage patterns usual on these vehicles. The model represents a tank of SS Panzer Division "Das Reich" at Kursk in 1943 - the markings are similar to the Halinski Tiger. Regards, Charlie |

The Tiger frame is pretty primitive - I made it out of doubled cereal box card to give me stiffer card. My normal 1mm laminate looked as though it would sag over the spans between the formers. As usual Modelarz strikes again - the centre former is just under 1mm wider than the end ones - will have to sand the side frames to get the skin to fit. The reinforcers are essential otherwise the thing flops around. The reinforcement is explicitly mentioned in the instructions so I don't think I'm modifying the kit beyond the original. The top plate (not glued on) has the turret rotation built in already. The rotation scheme is a short tube glued to a captured disk.
The translated instructions have proved useful already - the diagrams refer to a part "K12" which doesn't exist - the correct part is #92 which forms to wall of the cylinder sticking out of the hull. Much sanding ahead to get the skins to fit properly I think. Regards, Charlie |

So many memories, I think I built this 10 years ago or something.
I got my brother to help me cut out wheels, and I still gave up. Hope you have fun with it!

This is going to be quite an undertaking, I'm looking foward to watching the Tiger grow.

Doubled cereal boxes. I'll have to try that. Looks like a solid start, Charlie. I wish I had the nerve to attempt this one!

Hull skin is on....
Lots of sanding of the frame to get the skins to fit. The oversized middle former raised its ugly head again - but I'll just live with it. Getting the skin on was a bit tricky - the bottom goes on first, then the back and top of the upper part, then the glacis part of the front, then the sides of the top part. The fit is quite good but I think if I were building this again I'd add a lot to the frame especially around the sponson (projecting parts of the sides). I'll put some of the small parts on the hull and then start on the wheels. Regards, Charlie Last edited by CharlieC; 02-04-2009 at 12:01 AM. |

Looking good Charlie. It looks like there are going to be a lot of those small parts going on the hull.

I'm about to start my first proper tank model; what kind of glue do use to stick the skins onto the frame?
