Very cool. Is this a scratch built? Or is a kit available somewhere?

Also, did you place the Sun at the center? If not, what's at the center?

Thanks,
SFX

Very unique project, Vorcha.
I would love to see the build description of this as it would lend very well to our homeschool astronomy module.

Thanks

Ok, i will describe it very short now and make a full description later, for i don´t have time right now...

1st:
Find a 2D STAR MAP with the appropriate scale... here an example:

2nd:
Stretch the IMAGE, till the circle becomes a circle on your screen (4x)

3rd:
the stretched image gives you x- and y- coordinates, the original image gives you z- coordinates

4th:
print the stretched image two times, glue on cardboard, make HOLES through both (fix them temporaryly together) with a needle on the beginnings of every star on the plates

5th:
note all z- coordinates (hight), weather positive or negative on a paper

6th:
fix the two plates apart from eachother the way you want (as you can see, I used thick cylinders, you can do whatever you want, but it must be stable to all sides!!!!!!!)

7th and 8th:
get a long THREAD and get it through both the holes for every star, begin from one end and go to the other. As you proceed, make PLASTELINE BALLS around the thread according to the z- coordinates and with the colours used in the image! Be very, very careful, as you might make mistakes! Use a RULER to get the points, where you have to place the STARS, fix the threads with glue or whatever on the outsides of the plates, fix the plasteline with GLUE!

9th:
paint the plates (difficault but possible )

10th:
Shout "EUREKAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!" :D:D:D:D:D:D

LOL, Vorcha

I never saw any attempt for something similar anywhere... do you know sth. about other people, who try sth. like this? (I thought, I made something really unique with this, because I didn´t find any 3D starmap even of metal or plastic anywhere...)
