Swing Boat
Here's another unusual model from kallboys.de. This one is a version of a double swing boat run by a UK fairground family - the Carter's steam fairs.
As you will see, all the signs are in German, but as the steam boat is in my home in the UK I thought I'd add the British flag. I have followed my usual habit with their kits and printed two of their pdfs on one sheet. This reduces the base to about 9 X 6 inches. The kit and the instructions are up to their usual high standard and while it is a bit "fiddly" at this size there were no problems during the build. I seem to be leaning towards vintage steam models so if anyone has any suggestions I would be grateful. Cheers Mike |

That's really nice. Now you just need a Showman's traction engine and trailer to pull the setup from one fair to the next.

Not sure if it is on this model, but the steam engine driving this ride from it's middle bay would indeed have been a traction engine if it was part of a mobile fair. So there would have been a trailer or two lurking nearby, and probably a living van too.
Back in the '50s these road trains were still legal to move from town to town, and what a spectacle they were ... but, as I hear it, you need a special 'Parade' licence just to run a steam engine on the road now. Very unlikely a 3 or 4 trailer train would ever be allowed to run again. Especially on the crap Tarmac roads we have now. Ahhh, the memories! Those WERE the days my friend. Nice build Mike. It will go nicely with Chandler's Fair if it can be scaled to 00 scale. I'm still looking for a Chair-o-plane if anyone knows of a paper one.

Johnny,
Thanks for the info - the model includes the engine. It's quite small - not like the real Showman's engine - I'm still looking for a kit of a showman's engine - I made one years ago but I didn't keep it. Can you give me more info on Chandler's fair? Kallboys have a kit of a roundabout - perhaps it could be turned into a chair o plane. Cheers Mike |

The last person I referred there did manage to contact Pete and got hold of the carousel. I do have a collection of roundabouts that I'm looking at to convert, but I'm not so good at re-drawing things. This is good, but being plastic, re-scaling is not possible. This is the real thing ... I used to work on one of these a couple of lifetimes ago when I was a Teenage Teddy Boy.

Mike,
A very nice build, indeed! I think a lot of us kids dreamed of working for a Circus or Carnival. It looks like Johnny had the courage to actually do it. John |
