Clavichord
Perhaps the quickest, smallest and simplest model (for me, at least)
Also the real thing could be the smallest and simplest keyboard instrument. The originals were built about the 14th century, but in the late 1800's interest in ancient instruments gained a lot of interest, that continues to day. I looked into the possibility of building the real thing and found that kits were about £4,000. Adding the price to the knowledge that I was hopeless at any instrument, I decided not to bother. However, I found a small paper kit on one of the kit makers sites and decided that would be enough! It goes nicely with a couple of pianos I made some years ago. If anyone's interested here's the site the fun house The kit is 2 inches wide and has 5 parts - 4 legs and a body ;-) Mike |

Hi All,
And hi, Mike Stamper. That's a fine looking clavichord you've built there. It looks like a photograph was used to show the sound board and action. I would have passed on a £4,000 kit, too. My Aunt June loved Renaissance music, and she often took me in tow when she would attend a small concert featuring period instruments. Not many people know the difference between a crumhorn and a racket, but I do thanks to June. The clavichord is among the earliest of keyboard instruments and it still has a following today. Small and portable, its method of sounding the strings is unique. Crude by today's synthesized standards, there is still a place in modern music for this soft, uncomplicated instrument. Visit YouTube for videos on its construction and sound. Recommended are: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcfl3lYQy9M https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlH_ny3-BG8 There are many other videos showing clavichord performances, too. Please excuse my going off on a tangent. (That's an old clavichord joke). Score and fold, Thumb Dog |

Thanks for your comments.
TG - don't fret about the pun, although I think the model is of a fretted clavichord :-) A few months ago I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon with a local company that makes all kinds of keyboard instruments, so picked up a lot of info about clavichords! Cheers Mike |
