Thanks for the confidence support. I'll study the plans I saw from the nudge in the correct direction.
I did notice that the whole thing looked kinda small even when scaled correctly in CAD. The best way might be to put the plans/elevations in Photoshop, turn down the transparency and overlay them as if they were on acetate to compare them with the kit ones I drew. Plus I'll keep up drawing some of the vehicles. I did the Weetabix 10 ton Lorry, but can't really tell if is a Foden truck, the Leyland Hippo, or the other types of lorrys, I think the artist back then, 60 years ago drew it as a mix of different ones. Just to give the "feel/look" of the large transporters. The PDF attachment here has some major errors and it's NOT worth putting together until the problems are worked out. Jeff |

Happy to be of some help!
About the control tower drawings, one is intended to be from a "reconstructed" tower in a US museum. The other, with the airfix tower parts, was made by an enthusiast. While the dimensions I suppose being similar, the reconstructed one has a extra door in the ground floor, at left (viewed from front w/balcony) . Real towers had only a window as the other picture/drawing show. By the way, here are some links on airfield related papermodels, maybe of some use/help: (The two bellow, despite refered as 1/72 and 1/144, I think that they are undersized. at least they should be rescaled before print/used, to any know "real" dimension as reference.) Bad timing
While working on a drawing, (not the watch office) I was on the internet checking some references I bookmarked when my monitor went black. Then came up in the little box "no signal" It was an Oh #$#%&$ moment.
Didn't come back so something died on my video card and will have to be replaced when Covid19 passes. It does give more time for more discussions on the forum. I know we all like to see the model pics. Kampffleger's structures look the closest in relation to the period. Rescale for some most likely. As for the tower the files are saved. I also saved the drawing I was working on just before going online, but the Cad prog was open when I rebooted to shut down. Not great without the monitor to see where to click the mouse. Being authentic brings up the question how much? The kelloggs village is not any "real" place but gives the romantic vision we all have for the past. Turn thy swords into plowshares was written and that's what is happening to some of the real towers and airstrips of WW2. Many were farms back then, changed when needed and have returned to food production. So my point is that my spitfire is the fantasy aces high markings model. I got the 303 sqdrn. Hurricane which is really a fiddler's green. (A new story to tell later) If I change the markings on either or both then I have to find the real base, squadrons planes and vehicles and the nearby town. 30 were hurricane bases during the 1940 BOB, so quite a lot to choose from. I saw the airfix one someone did with the interior using the airfix tower and modified it here and there. I'm thinking maybe a openable one from the plans might be a good choice. Hello Jeff,
(If you were in a desktop, did you check the pc/monitor cable connection to see if it was well fitted? Once it happened to me.) In my opinion, the "feel" is more important than "being autentic"... if it looks good to you and gives you satisfaction, that is the most important. As for the rest, I would not worry too much about the aircraft markings, airfield locations etc. As always in dioramas, the reality is "compressed" in a smaller space, showing the probable diversity of "real" elements , with "less space" between them... A railway model set is a fine example! Regarding an airfield diorama, or part of one, in 1/72, it would be a very large display, and with a nearby village, bigger! And usually airfields weren't located "right near" the village, so a true scale model... better not think on it! WW2 RAF airfields had more or less similar layouts and buildings, where we can see the real typical distances between buildings, runways, entrances, etc, but they can be used to "think" a display and show a very credible compressed reality and action! Some more vehicles ideas, Albion refueller, control caravan, fuel trailer, Fordson N and David Brown tractors, bedford QL refueller... Regarding the kampfgruppe towers, one of the versions is also based in the Airfix tower. The have another one that is based on the "Ed_Bertchys 1/100" RAF Bentwaters tower, with is accurate, but not wartime, as it has extensions and modern watch office. |
