Weetabix RAF

For 2020, thought I'd share my test build of a redraw/recolor of the old Weetabix RAF control truck.
Not sure what the original sizes were on the old cereal boxes but mine is 1/72 scale.
Other variants are in the works but need color and test building. Based on Weetabix AEC Matador gun tractor.

Wow, what a difference. The 3D wheels look great. Are you planning to color the parts, or will this be a white model?

Hm-mm, How do we keep the structure from bowing out between the wheels?
We could cross with the box like structure as seen in the last forum post above the roof. see (pic 2).

Well let's try the toothpick axles and see where that gets us.
I'll add two reinforcing tubes cut from 1" long by the width of the chassis.
Might be good if the holes for the axles are made too big. (pic 1).

Almost ready to close up the top. Looking closer to a Matador now.
Treads look funny though. My photo research shows different types of tread patterns anyways,
at least three styles in kits and from real surviving ones in photos. Over 7000 were made during WWII.

Also in the last picture you can see that the tread doesn't match the lines on the outer face.
Been having that trouble since joining the group and my first posting of my U.S. troop carrier then.
(Think I figured it out though, we'll see when the next test build goes up).

And a Freebie, Color Version 1.0 if anyone's interested.
I believe that I have this one scaled down to 1/144th
so you might have to scale up 2 times for 1/72.
If I'm wrong let me know and I'll re-post a new color one.

A little big?

The model seems a bit big, but by the dimensions on the internet it should be correct.
I have been using 15/16" as a basis for a 6' tall person, as that is what I get when I take my ruler to my 1/72 scale figures. Minus the base.
Here's a pic with an old ESCI British "Tommy". A few more bits and pieces and it will be done over the weekend.
When I do a color one I might try using my blue craft paper, it'll save on some blue ink for the public library.

Nice to see your new project DT! I meant to thank you for your Ferret model, turns out the Philippines has a few of them sourced from the grey market!

Last fiddly parts

So, here is the finished test build. I'll have to re arrange the parts if I do a color one with the blue paper I intend to use.
Otherwise I can't get the white areas for the checkerboard unless I cut a whole bunch of white squares.
Best way would to print the blue body parts cut out, then paste to a white/black print out and print one for the tires in grey.
So it would unfortunately use up three half sheets.

The wind sock looks funny, and broke already twice since taking the pics.
If I put thread as a true sock it would hang tapered end down.
Right now it looks like some kind of megaphone on top. So I'd leave it off if re-building the model in color.
Photo two shows my error, I forgot to extend the front area above the arc of the fenders. Corrected in color version 2.0
Wheels roll really well despite being paper.

Have fun putting it together!

Moving on to the next one in my set of 4.
