Old does not mean unfit for purpose, another aircraft that could with modern avionics, be perfectly usable is the Buccaneer. The Canbera was flown well after the RAF dropped it to recon role, by the USAF as the B 57. The problem is that even in the UK our armaments industry is now a private venture capital business which requires constant new profits to make it look attractive to investors. This means we spend more than we need to for less than wee need. More than a little peeved by the greed of governments, to help out folk with more than enough so they can return the favour when they go out of public 'life'.
Those walls would have a few dings and holes when I was finished with them and would probably have some stains too. Last edited by Mike1158; 04-12-2015 at 05:15 AM. |

And what about the A-1 Skyraider, put in operation in 1945 and, soon after, considered as obsolete with regards to the new jets, but returned to action during the Vietnam War thanks to matchless features for close ground support to troops and escort of the Jolly Rogers in rescue missions where the jets were not able to do the job. Decomissioned only in 1972 ... and may be later in some exotic countries. ;-)

The same can be said for the A-26 Invader of WWII. Brought back for Korea as B-26, then again for Vietnam. The one in the museum here saw conflict in WWII and Korea, and just missed action in Vietnam.

How about the B-52? I think the newest ones are as old as me, they just keep rebuilding them and they just keep doing the job......Rich

The B52 is another ancient bird. First flew in in early 50s.
I was lucky enough to see a Canberra's, Hunter's, Dak's and Vampires all flying around in together in anger, and that was in the late 70's. I would have to have seen B52's and Phantoms fly as well though. And Skyraiders! A favourite plane of mine, even though I have never seen one in the flesh!

I heard a joke that says "The mother of the last B-52 pilot hasn't been born yet", or something like that.

There is the classic B52 joke. I sure most of you have heard it, but just in case.......
A Phantom was escorting a B52 and generally making a nuisance by flying around the old bomber. The message for the B52 crew was, "Anything you can do, I can do better." The B52 pilot announced that he would rise to the challenge, and the B52 then did nothing and just continued to fly - straight and level. Confused, the fighter pilot asked, "I'm waiting, what are you going to do?" From the B52 - "We just shut down two engines."
