Thanks for the article and great pics. Had no idea a bunch of them are being retired. Are they really that old? Has it really been 30+ years? Am I feeling really old all of a sudden? Don''t answer that last question......

developed in the early 70s to counter a possible Soviet invasion of Europe. Was viewed as obsolete and a waste of money by the end of the 80s. Would have been retired then if it were not for Desert Storm. Where it proved itself and saved its retirement. but i guess its true what they say, all good things must end.

Thanks for the link - great pictures.
The AirForce likes pointy nose aircraft .
The DOD should turn over the A-10 to the Army for the close air support.
Have first hand knowledge on how the "Sandys" (sky raider) are so effective for CAS.

I agree. but the problem is the production forms were all destroyed late 80s. They had to cannibalize the bone yards to get the fleet operational for Desert Storm. they had to set up a whole industry of bone yard to service. They may be running out of parts.

You'd think they'd (whoever they are) have learned by now to not destroy the forms, tooling, dies and such for a minimum of, say,20 years after all production has ceased. Of course that could throw a real monkey wrench into the procurement process for sexy, shiny new weapons, planes, tanks, ships, etc.
