I misspoke before. This LightSail will not curse the blankness of space after all with all of our names. Those who did sigh up for this will get instead several laps around the world with it becoming bigger and bigger till it all goes black and we burn up. Sorry about that. Have a nice day. wc

Mission managers say the shoebox-sized LightSail satellite powered up its tiny deployment motor Sunday, and data from the diminutive spacecraft indicate its experimental solar sail unfurled in orbit 220 miles above Earth. The deployment sequence began at 3:47 p.m. EDT (1947 GMT) off the west coast of Baja California, when LightSail was in radio contact with a ground station in San Luis Obispo, California. Reentry will be Sunday June 14th, 2015. There is a second launch of another LightSail in 2016 which will be placing the LightSail into a higher orbit in order to do real sailing in the way it was designed to do. An interesting model is available at LightSail-1 Scale Model . Really unique construction materials. Half-scale model is up in our downloads under sci fi & real space, real space, unmanned. Challenging only if you want to include a deployed sail. Full scale version being passed back and forth with the Planetary Society - should be out shortly.
