Museum fire fighters
I just find it amazing that we still use 1950's vintage planes to fight fires.
Really? We can't fund a service that uses new C-130J , or B-767 or even surplus B747-400 etc... Heck, we give away airplanes to some countries and some get chopped up ( like C-27J in Afghanistan last year ). Why not get them back and make fire fighters out of them? Why use a flying museum fleet to fight fires? Isaac

Good question about the fire fighting museum pieces. This plane looks like the one that Richard Dreyfuss flew t 25 years ago in the movie "Always". The PBY that John Goodman flew in that movie crashed just a few years later. In 2002, a C130 and a P4Y-2 "Privateer" built in 1945 were lost fighting fires due to wing spar failures.
It would be a good thing to see a few million invested to upgrade the equipment used to fight forest fires. Curt |

Living most of my life out in forest and range fire country, they're lucky just to get enough funding to put bodies on the fire lines. Most of the planes are from contractors who buy what they can find and afford. Cal Forestry, LA County and City have some of their own fleets, but think everybody else depends on contractors.
After some of the crashes a few years ago, most of the older, larger planes were banned. The only large plane I know of right now is the DC10, since I think the last Mars was pulled from service last year. |

Dreyfuss' plane was an A-26 Invader...........
And wing spar failures are pretty common given the weight of the water and retardant these things carry in very, very unstable air......... A C-130 was lost several years ago due to this very reason. (and wasn't a pretty sight to see) The CL-215 was specifically designed for this job, but again cost is the major concern when purchasing aircraft for this purpose. And it is cheaper to buy surplus aircraft and refub them for this than it is to buy new aircraft.......... The government, both state and federal USED to help support the cost of this service but I do believe that was cut back by the feds a couple of years ago......... this is one reason that Air Guard C-130s and helicopters have been used to help with this on major (huge) fires........ |
