Dakar Rally could return to Africa

https://www.iol.co.za/motoring/motor...frica-14073358

This is a very good development, and Tunisia does have a point, it is a lot of money to support the logistics and the security of the race.

I also wish they would go back to the full stage of racing, not drive a couple of hundred miles on the liaison parts of the stage, and then have the racing stage, this was one of the hallmarks of the race back in the 1980s, long hard stages, with teams at times arriving mere hours or minutes before the start of the next stage.
There was also a time where the support teams would have to run the same stages, and not just drive a support route to the next bivouac.

Ah, one can wish

That would be ok if they could get it back to the good style of stages. The Algerian Federation of Motorsports is correct to be concerned about the money and the security needed to have a safe race in northern Africa again.

I agree that the support teams need to be out there running the same course as the racers, the last few weeks I have been searching the internet for paper models of the Dakar rally trucks and was surprised at how many are out there.

It has probably run its course in Africa, the constant theft and risk of personal safety saw to that. With the current situation on the continent no better, worse in fact, the number of people put at risk would see certain death from those wanting to grab hostages for barter.
