I only got 1 quote back on the scanning. $2000!!! But that was for a completely surfaced part. Probably close to 1 week of labor to close out the surfaces that are hidden where the laser can't reach.

I might ask him to just make a unrefined "cloud of points". You can buy a desktop scanner for $2500, so I think most of the $2000 quote was for design labor.

Stay tuned: I haven't decided my next move yet.

Ken

OK - update to the plan......

Not being one to give up easily, I decided to use the clay model as a 3d reference to transcribe to CAD. I started with the moon boots. In the end, the CAD data using this method will be much easier from a data-manipulation perspective, but the final outcome should be exactly the same. Some of the mistakes that I made in the clay model will be corrected in math data. For example, the boots are not high enough, and the crotch is too low. Taking height and depth measurements from the clay model, I can correct these errors.

I hope to have the paper boots assembled by the end of this weekend.

Ken

When you see the boots, it will become obvious that the methods used to build them are completely different than anything else in paper (at least that I have seen.

So, I will create a file of parts and instructions and post them as a free download in this forum. Then anyone who cares to, can download the boots and build them and provide feedback to this forum. This is give people an idea of the construction methods of the astronaut.

Stay tuned...

Ken

Erm there looks to be another way coming up for 3D scanning.

It seems Microsoft missed a trick with the new Kinect sensor module. Some guys have hacked an interface to the PC and are coming up with some remarkable and accurate 3D scans and new controls for 3D modelling tools.

Google Kinect Hack and go hmmm....

Thanks for the info on the scanning - I'll check it out.

I started the paper version - so this thread is officially closed.

I moved the astronaut build to the "space" forum.

Do not reply to this thread....

Thanks, Ken
