Project Marinefährprahm 1/16

Well as some may know from my introduction, I am taking on a new project to bide my time. This will be an on going project due to the sheer scale of it and what's involved.

The overall idea is a German landing craft housing a tiger tank that is radio controlled. It will be 1/16 scale and fully working to the point of the tank will load up, be transported and embark on a beach assault.

Now for the geeky stuff.

The Marinefährprahm was the largest landing craft that the Germans had, it was produced from 1941 and came in many forms. The one I will be recreating is known as a type D. Its the largest of its kind and was used to transport anything and mainly the tanks, it normally carries 2 but have be known to carry 4 tigers which many will know is a big lump of steel.

They were derived from Rhine barges and come in at the following dimensions.

Displacement: 220-239t
Length: 47.04-49.84m
Beam: 6.53-6.59m
Draught: 4.7m
Draft: 1.4m at full load
Propulsion: 3 Deutz Diesel 390HP
Speed: 10.5kn (empty)
Range: max. 1340nm at 7kn
Capacity: 85-140t
Complement: 17-25
Armament: 2×2cm AA, 1×3.7cm AA, 1×7.5cm
Armour: 2cm

When scaled down, this means my model will be 312.5cm long with a beam of 43.75cm beam. Yes she's a big one. There are a few areas that will need careful planning such as the mid seam, front ramp and retracting cover.

So this is where it begins, stay watching for updates as they come.

Interesting project! Do you have a picture of the craft and was it ever used by the Germans during ww2?
