Thanks Don, unfortunately those were taken in our last days of what passes as spring for us, only 90. Now after a couple of weeks of 110+, including one 119 day, a lot of the vegetation is just cooked. Think this is going to be a long, really hot summer for us.
Kevin, the Shrike is a really interesting looking bird. |

Doug, Don, Whulsey - thank you.
Here now is a really colourful bird - a Lilac Breasted Roller. One of my favourites, it has similar prey to the shrikes. One interesting thing about this bird is that it shuns humans and human habitations. Thus around towns and inhabited areas it is very rare. In conservation areas, or areas where there are no humans it can often be found. A sensible bird I suppose!

Oh come on, Kevin You're making this one up, right?
It is the most improbably colored bird I have ever seen. Many thanks for sharing it with us. I have nothing special to report from Carlisle, Pennsylvania, USA, except that this morning during my walk I was serenaded by a virtuoso mockingbird perched atop a light pole. In the back garden, the usual suspects: sapsucker, red-bellied woodpeckers, blue jays, Carolina wren, catbirds, cardinals, tufted titmice, chickadees, white-breasted nuthatches, and entirely too many grackles. Don, if you think the bird is bright you must see it in flight! It flashes that very dark blue lilac!
Unfortunately, try as I can, I cannot get a picture of one in flight. They sit around a lot, and then, wham, explode into brief action! Don - you list the "usual suspects". How about some pictures of them? Not special for you, but I've never seen them!

Don, do you ever see any red-winged blackbirds mixed in with the grackles?
Kevin, yep that is a very colorful bird. I got bumped by a mockingbird the other day. It must not have got the memo from the other resident mockingbirds about me being the big human thing that puts out the bread.

Doug - Earlier in the year, we had red-winged blackbirds with their distinctive "chek" sound. It is possible that some are still around, but I can't confirm. Will keep on the lookout. Don

Haven't posted any photos in awhile. Guess I'd better dig a few up. Warning sign on the Morro Bay docks. You can see a gull gave its opinion of it. A sparrow on Morro Rock. A couple of wading birds on the south end of the bay. Turkey vultures, they're hard to get photos off; but I keep trying. Cormorants and pelicans at Spooner Cove. As you can see getting tired of the AZ summer and thinking about the coast.

Time for a few more. This were taken in March on the south side of the Salt River
Riparian area of the Audubon Society. A hawk, probably a red tailed, and a Great Egret. Got some rain last night so supposed to barely hit a 100 today so may wander back down there. Getting cabin fever from being stuck in with the heat plus, for you that have been around for awhile and maybe remember some of the issues from last year, dealing with the house in California still.
