Don - excellent and thought provoking images.
If ever birds could look miserable these do! Excellent clarity and colour, especially given the terrible potential back lighting. I would be interested in the settings used to take these - or were they done on auto?

Hawk - identification needed
Today, a large hawk settled down on an upended flower pot in our back garden. Images below. I was shooting through a rain-spattered and dirty window, but I think the images are good enough for an i.d.
My first thought was juvenile Cooper's hawk, but this creature looked bigger than a Cooper. The tail striping is consistent with a Cooper, but the white face and white eyebrow (and the size) make me wonder if it might be a juvenile northern goshawk. We had a bird that looked much like a goshawk a few years ago, and we are within their usual winter range. Our most common raptors (aside from turkey vultures) are Coopers, sharpies (this one seems way too big), red-tails (clearly not), and the occasional northern harrier (clearly not). What do you all think? Don |

Northern Goshawk looks good. If not, we can pretend.

Wow Don that is a great picture (pretty enough to paint), identifying immature hawks is a challenge, buteos can be very difficult if you live where several occur. A large accipiter clearly and immature Coopers if female can be quite large, facial markings suggest this too, but I have puzzled over immature hawks at length. We had a nice day driving from my Dad's in Orofino saw nice Pileated, Great horned sitting on nest, Rough legged, Red tailed and lots of Kestrels.

Interesting. It appears to be an amputee, a very rare sight indeed.

The ice melted yesterday after being so thick folks were driving 4-wheelers around this winter...now we have swallows back for a week and the ducks back with robins singing in the morning...is very nice to see the spring. These are pics from the last few days sorry about the poor quality

Don, excellent shots of the bird of prey......
Glen - great winter shots too. Winter seems to lend itself to great subdued contrasty colours for a setting..
