I'd sure hate to try to paint those intricate patterns correctly. Yowsah

Now here we have a Swainson's Spurfowl.
Spurfowl are so-called because they have a large spur on each ankle. They eat seeds, bulbs, grass (seeds), roots, berries. roots etc as their prime food, but will also feed on insects. They are water dependant, although they do not live near water, and drink daily early in the morning and late in the evening. Only fly when threatened.

Here is one of my favourite birds - the Southern Ground Hornbill.
I was lucky to get this shot (the only shot) - these are endangered now and highly venerable. In Southern Africa, there are less than 1,000 individuals estimated to be left. This was a solo bird - sad as this really brings home the declines. Usually, they are in groups of 5 to 7 birds, made up of a mating couple with their attendant "helpers". In these groups they interact with each other, playing, socialising, preening each other and also foliage bathing together. Solitary birds tend to associate with baboons. They are big birds, weighing up to 10 pounds, with heights of up to 50 inches. Their prey includes chameleons, lizards, snakes, beetles, grasshoppers, snails, frogs, toads, tortoises, mongoose, squirrels, birds and hares. They hunt in a group, often "herding" prey, and act as a group to kill the prey if it is large. The red throats are inflated when they call - they "boom" loudly!

Thank you! We do have a colourful variety - I think the different habitats lend themselves to this!
