Birds they ate two of my squirrels in this last week . They were hawks.

Birds are changing with the seasons here, nesters are leaving or quietly feeding about with migrant flocks, Yellow-rumped warblers, Mountain chickadees, 3 sp of nuthatch, Downy woodpeckers. We have had an invasion of sorts from birds normally South of us, DC cormorants in front of our place alot now, Caspian terns less common, and this week a Common egret! The cormorants roost in the neighbor's Douglas firs at night, weird. The Ospreys are still here, but will move South next month, (they only eat fish) other hawks are passing through, Coopers, ect, still waiting for any truly winter birds, but we rode up the local hills to about 4,000ft and grouse (ruffed) and moose up there!

We head to Cape May next Monday for a week of birding, walking through the woods and wetlands and along the beaches, and cozy evenings in the cottage at Cape May Point, then back to attand a conference on teaching classical Chinese military theory at senior service colleges and lots of work preparing for my lectures in Korea in early November, book reviews, and an on-line course I am developing (with the IPMC in between at the end of October). But another two weeks at Cape May and winter birding to look forward to at the end of November.

Will let you know what's going on during the migration week after next.

Nothing like the cool sea breeze....sounds fun Don! Look forward to hearing what you see out there. Was reading the old Chapman bird book with illustrations from Fuertes and Jacques, interesting info about some of the alcids especially the "penguin" (now extinct Great auk) which used to frequent those coasts in the winter. My old avatar was a Long-tailed duck photo from our place, one of my friends thought I should add it to my "yard list"(which I don't have):D

This afternoon there was a lot of bird noise outside - turned out to be a flock of galahs drinking from a puddle in the gutter outside my place. Just had to grab the camera...

It was a dull, overcast afternoon, the shutter speed wasn't fast enough to freeze the flying bird in the first image.

Charlie you lucky guy! What a gorgeous sight, I bet they were noisy, though

Along the birding line, I have held two wild birds in the last month, the lake froze over and a goose too weak to fly was out there, I ended up catching him/her and transporting to the unfrozen river about 5 miles north (kind of a long story how that was done). Then a few days ago a Pygmy nuthatch hit the window, I decided to draw the little fella even though it looked as though it might have a neck injury, so drew some pictures, while it slowly perked up and eventually looked good enough to release in the yard. It gives me some satisfaction...and is always a thrill to see a wild bird up close.
