Why did the elephant cross the road?

A middle aged elephant fresh from a mud bath (which is effective in reducing the number of parasites), munches some Easter grass at the edge of the road.....

Sea Lion Morro Bay dock

Here's one in a bit happier day for all the starving sea lion pups off the West Coast that are getting hit by warmer then normal water affecting their food sources.

Are they friendly?

Can you explain the background to the starving story a bit more?

Thanks.

Not real friendly and they get pretty good size with sharp teeth.

As you may have heard the Southwest US has been pretty much hot and dry. A contributing factor is a band of warm water in the Pacific that now stretches from the Canadian border down to Baja Mexico. Besides us not getting any rain or snowpack its ran off most of the food fish that sea lions feed on and feed their pups. So the mothers are having to go so far out and spend so much time trying to find food for the pups that they are starving. This is causing them to beach since they become too weak too keep afloat.

Went out to get some rosemary and found this critter hanging around eating mosquitoes and such.

Good grief!

Looks like some sort of a spider with bungee capabilities!

What is it?

Still trying to identify it. It is around 2cm from the tip of the lower legs to the tip of the upper legs. Closest so far is Argiope aurantia (Black and Yellow Garden Spider or Golden Garden Spider). Does not seem as fat in the body as some, but there are photos on the internet with skinny spiders. Maybe this one needs to eat more bugs.

It is still out there but the spider runs away real quick now when I get close.

Any idea how it uses the web?

It not a form of Orb Spider? Do you have those in the USA?
