The first shot is a great pic composition wise.

Hopefully someone will ID them. I do not know one seal from the next.

whulsey...the seals look like they might be young Elephant Seals. If I recall, that species is rather common in that area. I have a friend there who talks about them a lot.

Ash - i was hoping you would help! Thank you!

Look forward to more of your lizards. Have tried photographing lizards, but here they shift around all the time. - especially when you point a lens at them!

Nope, they are California sea lions (Zalophus californianus).

The turtle (Lepidochelys kempii) was a little over 2 feet long.

Thanks Nebeltex. I thought sea lions looked "beardy"? How do you tell the difference from a seal?

The turtle looked huge in the photo!

The turtle looked large because we got very close to it before I snapped the photo. I could have reached out and touched it, but that sort of thing is frowned upon...

The sea lions are also known as "California seals", but they are not "beardy". The male Elephant seals have a bit of a snout that looks like a shortened elephant's trunk, hence the name. They are also huge, almost walrus sized and not so brown in color. Harbor seals are smaller and usually more grey in coloration.

That also explains the colouration.......

Be nice just to toddle down to the local harbour for a look or two.....

I stand corrected on the seals 8v) The only non-whale sea creature I have ever seen has been Walruses while in Thule, Greenland.

One thing I do know the name of is this critter. I had to travel 2,000 miles to photograph it, as we don't have this species around here...and I do miss those cute little critters...even when most people consider them pests.

This fellow stared me down for several minutes before sitting up, turning around and slowly walking away.

Cute little fellow!

Why are they regarded as pests?
