Listening to the 24 Hrs of Le Mans on the computer and bouncing back and forth between doing a bit of modeling and photoediting. So thought I'd put up a few of the 6 legged photos. Ladybug and bee from San Luis Obispo area, butterfly from northeastern Oklahoma, chinch bug from central Oklahoma (not sure if that's the correct name but that's what we called them, do know they will bite the hell out of you), dragonfly from the infield slough at Portland International Raceway

More photos that are nice. Don't you just love the "macro" function?

Chinch bug? Hmmmm.... I hadn't heard them called that before, but it does make sense. Around here, we call them "stink bugs", because if you smash one, they emit a foul odor. I never knew they could bite...

Here is a photo of a butterfly right out of chrysalis, and a "leaf hopper". Excellent natural camouflage. I've been told the last can bite the crud out of a person too...

The standardized common names for insects is not very good compared to birds, say, where there is no need for latin names as the common names are clearly understood for many years. Same is true for larger common insects only....the leaf footed bug is a hemipteran and is called many names including stink bug, although not really the classic stick bug, also a hemipteran family bug. Your butterfly is awesome and beautiful. the Katydid though is not a biter!
But in the grasshopper or orthoptera family if memory is correct, another good photo...

Nebeltex,

also heard them called stink bugs but there was a different one that was also called a stink bug (although if I remember right it was actually a beetle) around my area in central Oklahoma. Glen is right in that it seems every region has their own local names for insects.
