Truk (Chuuk) Lagoon - Negative Scanning

It's been a long time since I've scuba dived, but I'm putting together a short presentation on a trip to Truk Lagoon back in November 1990 for my Knights of Columbus council.
Not a great underwater photographer but I'm happy with the results. I'm "scanning" the old negatives using a gizmo called "instascan" in conjunction with my iPhone. It's essentially a glorified light box station. For the non professional/average person it works pretty good. I've used outside commercial scanning services but they're fairly slow and I don't like the negs (very precious) being out of my possession. Also, want to make the best adjustments I can to the scans myself.
Here's screen shots of the photo boards so far.

That looks like a fun bit of equipment. I hope the presentation goes well.

My dive instructor showed us some of his pictures from Truk from around 2008. That was pretty cool to see. It's on my "I hope I live long enough to dive there" list. It truly is an airplane graveyard.

And according to my instructor, it's also home to a very large group of black tip reef sharks.

I've seen pictures with a lot of black-tipped sharks, but that's one thing I didn't see there. Saw one very long baracuda.

When the trip moved on to Pohnape we saw a lot of shaks and nice eagle rays.

Great project, Joe. The images and the slide layouts are superb.

Did you know that the current issue of Naval History magazine includes a 70th anniversary article about Operation HAILSTONE: Naval History Magazine | U.S. Naval Institute

There is also an article about Hunley and one about the Confederate ironclad navy that is bound to be of interest to Corey Ertz.

Thank, Don!

I was not aware of the magazine article, thanks for the heads up. Going to see if I can get my hands on one.

The more info, the better. I've found 3 different time frames for the attack - February 16 & 17, 17 & 18, and 16, 17 and 18!

My experience.

I went through this a few years ago.
I have a few thousand Slides...and just as many negatives...laying around.
And I really wanted to get a few transferred over to digital.

So I looked into transfer services, and those slide and negative scanners,
and other expensive equipment...
it all seemed a little too much to get into.

Until I came across a forum and did a little reading about a particular flatbed scanner.

You see, I was also looking for a cheap flatbed scanner at that time,
and I was hunting through sales of older scanners
looking for something that would work with Win XP.
(I had to have a flatbed scanner with a decent dpi scan)

I ended up buying one of the most common and cheapest flatbed
scanners, a Canon Canoscan 4200.
Canon CanoScan 4200F Photo, Film and Document Scanner - Canon UK

In the lid of the 4200 is a removable panel,
into which fits the Slide and negative holder that comes with the scanner.
It has preset scanning methods once you slide in a set of up to five Slides
or negatives...or you can do it all manually.

Its so fast...and so easy...and the results are as good as is possible.

Its a USB connection for the scanner, and updated drivers are available from Canon.

I bought my scanner like brand new (used), in its original packaging, for $25.
I'm sure there are still a few of these around if you hunt.
Its a good alternative.

........

Nice iPhone gadget!!
Is your phone waterproof? or do you put it into a case?
My little HD cam is waterproof...but I 'm not.
So I'll probably never find out what its like to take underwater photos.

But I like looking at yours jagolden!

And, where is this Truuk Lagoon?
I'm confused.
