Airfix Quick-Build BAE Hawk
My great friend Phil (Gixergs) sent me this model for my birthday last month. It is one of the latest offerings from the venerable plastic-model company Airfix, part of their "Quick-Build" series that uses Lego-style connections, coupled with smooth pre-colored exterior surfaces to enable a young person, or older person who refuses to grow entirely up, to quickly build a realistic-looking model. Aimed primarily at younger or beginning modelers, they are also sturdy enough for heavy play.
This kit builds a BAE Hawk of the RAF, and comes with stick-on markings and a display stand. The builder has the option of snapping on the ventral gun pack (see Photo #4) instead of the stand; they mount to the same lug. The package and all-pictorial instruction leaflet indicate that the product is intended for ages five and up. Being 51, I had to take it apart and re-build it six times to get everything to fit together properly, and I still had two parts left over (also shown in photo #4)! But in the end, it looks like a hawk, looks quite nice on its stand, and I had a very good time putting it together and being a kid again for a little while. Thanks Phil- you're the best, pard! I love it when you have extra parts!!
It means you either have spares or you redesigned it better to go together with less!! I was watching a build thread on another forum of the big scale Airfix Red Arrows Hawk kit. I can't remember the scale...maybe 1/32 scale. Some very interesting stuff from Airfix now. Nice job.

Way cool! I didn't know that Airfix had this series of models. I'll have to see if the local Hobbytown has some. My son loves the kits that you have to snap/screw together. Despite my wife's best efforts, he is amassing a small air force on his book shelf.

That came out really well and I'm glad you had fun doing it. I think Airfix have a real winner on there hands so I can foresee more choices in the range soon. Happy birthday again mate.

Airfix is doing a good job in their new life remembering that a lot of people would like to have a 1/72 kit that looks good when finished, that doesn't require a major time investment and 40 or 50 bucks to buy.

That little bird turned out great man!!
I am also glad that there are more models that are easy to build, and at a reasonable price. I have a few of the newer Airfix releases, and they are pretty darned nice.. Jeff |

Are those available here in the US? I'd probably clean the store out if I found some. Legos (sorta), and airplanes. It can't get any better!
