Fancy Ropework

Dear List folks:
Another hobby, pictures below, Started with my father and me and Ashleys Book of Knots long time ago. I made all of the fids with a wood turning lathe and both wood and brass. I mostly make key chains, Lanyards, and Roserys.
Enjoy,
Miles

What materials do you use, Miles -- leather, string, yarn, or what? You're probably way ahead of me, but the old book "Leather Braiding," by Bruce Grant, might provide some additional ideas. (I have no desire to make my own leather laces, but suspect that most of the book's designs could be done just as well with modern parachute cord.)

Dear Yale:
I have about 20 books on rope work and leather braiding. Mostly I work with 60 pound cod line that I got in New Providence in 1 pound balls, I soak them in Hot Beeswax. had 20 balls from 7 years ago on my last ball. I found a person at a renisance fair this summer who has a rope walk I can get special made rope when I can afford it.
Enjoy,
Miles

It is nice to see something like this.

Funny thing, the street I live in is named after what was done in it: 'Touwbaan'. They twisted ropes here (long ones for ships) out of hemp (related to the plant now used for getting high).

Miles, figure you probably have a source for a rope machine; but if you don't you might check some of the tractor/farm equipment shows. Some have rope making displays and I've seen rope machines advertised in some of the farm and tractor magazines.

There are still places nearby where they make the ropes, either for museums or for real ships.

Odd that it didn't display, it might be region locked. But that image you attached is just how it looked ages ago.

Take a look at the ship modeling forums. There are all kinds of plans out there for making model ropewalks for model-sized ropes. Better yet, shoot Jim Krauzlis (member here) a PM and he should be able to help you find what you're looking for.
