Steam engine deaths...........................

One of my hobbies is photographing trains.

Here, steam engines are busy dying - victims of greed (metal value), lawlessness and disinterest.

A few years ago I've been talking with one man who is a curator of a train museum. He told me how he searches for old locomotives and carriages. Once he found a a stem locomotive and almost before he could make a deal - the train was scraped by the third part (maybe scrape thief). Sad story.

As he described the price usually starts for the price of scrape metal.

Sharunas - exactly the same thing happens here.

The story around the locos in the photo below is that they were being preserved but with the lawlessness here things got out of hand and they were being stripped for the metal by criminals. They were then secured and cut up by the preservation body as they could no longer be protected. The money was used to try and save some other locos.

Oh, I see now...
Still, someone is concern to save these machines, even if few of them must be sacrificed.

Hundreds have gone. There are a handful left........ What remains is also under threat.

I'll post some more pictures tomorrow of other sites.

That just gets me all upset seeing one getting cut up like that. I guess if its past the restoration point and can be used for parts that's one thing, but still bothers me.

Glad that here in the US and in GB not as much of a problem, but here we get the one that sets out with the owner going 'he's going to get around to working on it some day' as it slowly sinks into the dirt.

Not only were most of the locos OK, some are of (were) extreme historical significance. But I am not going to get on the band wagon - had enough. Used to assist with Preservation - do not any more.

Have a look at Google Images: disused steam locomotives. Many people like ruins of antique buildings - this is very similar...

It would be good to do a photo walk-around of some units? At least some information would remain...
