Compose paintings using paper models

I found a way to take the guesswork out of setting up these compositions featuring trees casting long shadows: use a paper 'model'!

Photo 1 shows simple black silhouettes fixed to a white card base and then backlit with an LED lamp. Other pics show the thing then being worked up into a finished painting...

The shadows on the snow are what catches the eyes.
There was a show on TV a few years ago showing Gary Spetz doing a watercolor of birch trees in the snow. That final picture of the painting reminded me of that. I really like those kind of paintings.

Don't worry Glynn. Real life always comes first. Take care of those things, we'll still be here when things settle down and you have more time. Your painting and methodology really is nice. I like it!
