Heritage Fleet

The September 2016 edition of the American Model Railroader magazine has an article on building a roundhouse to display a fleet of Norfolk Southern heritage locomotives to be displayed at the North Carolina Transportation Museum, in Spencer, NC, USA, which also is home to the roundhouse and turntable on which the model is based and upon which visitors to the museum can ride.

Barstow CA

Here's some from Barstow and the railroad museum there. The dark blue Focus in the 2nd is mine. It was late afternoon and the museum (the old depot) wasn't open.
The last one is the US Borax plant in Boron.

From my home town Pauls Valley, Oklahoma

Looking across the tracks from east. View from the southeast corner, that's the new Amtrak depot on the north. Front of the Amtrak depot. Old depot northeast corner. Steam engine display. This had been out in the city park since early 60's slowing rusting away and being vandalized. When it was decided to restore the depot as a city museum, it was cleaned up and brought over. Would at minimum have to have a new boiler and firebox build to become operational, but at least now it is being kept up visually. The crossing is on State Hwy 19 coming in from the east heading into downtown were it crosses US77.

Hiya!

In September I got to ride behind Nickel Plate Road Berkshire 765!

She was renumbered as 767 for these excursions.

Our car was one of the commuter coaches owned by the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Raillroad, on whose trackage the excursions were operated.

The trips were all sold out but many like me spent quite a bit of time in line at the commisary car. Also, the air conditioning quit in our car which prompted many to flee for cooler climes!

The trips were run as double-enders, with the Berkshire doing the pulling the initial 25 miles from Cleveland to Akron and CVL's own Montreal Locomotive Works FPA-4 6771 pulling us back home.

They held the photo runs at Boston Mills Ski Resort.

It was very overcast and had rained on and off so we were lucky to be able to have the run-by's at all.

All in all it was a great day and both the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society (owners of the Berk) and the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad deserve praise for a job well done!

In October, I went to an open house held by the Midwest Railway Preservation Society at the old Baltimore and Ohio roundhouse on West 3rd St. in the Cleveland flats.

Reading T-1 4-8-4 Northern 2100 is renting stall space for restoration work.

This is one massive machine!

Federal Railroad Administration rules require that vintage steam locomotives undergo extensive periodic testing. If you look close, you can see the boiler has been marked off with chalk(?) in a grid pattern for ultrasound and hydrostatic testing.

The 2100 was converted to oil firing which explains this arrangement on the backhead.

Looking down the left (fireman's) side we see Chessie, the roundhouse cat!

MRPS tours begin in this restored B&O wagontop bay window caboose. Beyond it you can see part of the steel mill.

On the right of this photo you can see 2100's tender which had been lettered "Ferroequus" for prior excursions.

On the left is an RS(?) diesel which they use to pull a pullman around during open houses. The car they used that day was the Mount Baxter, which was used in the filming of the Natural starring Robert Redford.

The motive power for the train used in that film was the MRPS owned ex-Grand Trunk Western 2-8-2 Mikado #4070, which is what I really came to see.

She too is undergoing extensive restoration. By loaning out her stall in the roundhouse, and by holding open houses and other fundraising activities, MRPS was able to raise enough money to start restoring the section of the structure that collapsed partially a few years back.

On this prior visit they couldn't even open the roundhouse doors for us. But in the intervening years the roof has been repaired over enough of the structure for the city to allow tours. I'm confident the new work underway now will look as great as what they did previously!

And loco 4070 will look as she did when I rode behind her in 1976! (Postcard from the trip)

A gift from my lady.

My lady rented a toy for me to drive. On October 2, I got to drive a REAL steam locomotive. The Nevada Northern Railway in Ely, Nevada maintains a museum and working railway. The loco is a a 2-8-0 Alco built in 1909. It is about a two hour run up the mountain and back down. The 'trainee' is not allowed to operate the loco in the yard, so I was watching part of the time. But out on the main line, it was all MINE! What a sweetheart (my lady and the locomotive)!
