A gift from my lady.
My lady rented a toy for me to drive. On October 2, I got to drive a REAL steam locomotive. The loco is a a 2-8-0 Alco built in 1909. It is about a two hour run up the mountain and back down. The 'trainee' is not allowed to operate the loco in the yard, so I was watching part of the time. But out on the main line, it was all MINE! :D What a sweetheart (my lady and the locomotive)!

What fun. Are you going to do a model of it?

Ken -
What a great experience! I have never had the glory of being at the throttle of a steam locomotive. I have ridden behind steam locomotives when I could do so over the years. I think my two best experiences were riding the Animas River Valley on the Durango and Silverton narrow gauge lone and a short (mileage) and long (duration) trip from Inchon to Osan on a steam narrow gauge railway in Korea. But I really envy you the experience of riding on the footplate and being in charge of a steam locomotive! Don |

I won't be modeling the '93, she is Standard Gauge and I work in narrow gauge. She is much too large for my layout anyway, I have lots of very tight corners. I originally told my wife I just wanted to ride but I am very glad I did drive. It was an experience of a lifetime. I am amazed at how much attention the machine takes. My mentor, the 'real' engineer volunteers on the line just to be able to play with the big old monster machine. He was great, coaching me and letting me make mistakes like slowing too much, blowing the whistle too early... LOL, but it was overall a great experience. I even shoveled some coal while turning the loco at the yard wye, that was in the 'no trainee driver' area.

A couple of SD40's coming from the east into Holbrook AZ. Unusual shots for me since they're early morning, of which I'm not a real big fan.

Not a big mornings fan either! Could you tell what they were hauling? I don't think I've seen cars like those before.
