Following on from the previous shot of the luxury Rovos Rail loco, this time a mix of more modern (1970's on!) locos.
An 18E electric unit and a Class 34 diesel (with a Class 36 diesel in the middle) rest at the end of the day at a small country station... The 18E on the right (this one built in 1982 and since upgraded) is a powerful locally designed electric loco. Hidden in the middle - the Class 36 (type SW1002) diesel-electric was designed for the South African Railways by General Motors Electro-Motive Division. Locally built, these are used as road locomotives. Lastly on the left, the Class 34 diesel-electric. Again designed for SAR, this time by General Electric (type U26C), and built in South Africa in the 1970's, these are still active.

A Platinum Train
A shot of a platinum consist in the north of the country. The train is loaded as it has covers on.
The loco is one of the modern Transnet Freight Rail locos - a Class 43 (a GE type C30ACi diesel-electric locomotive, designed by GE Transportation Systems). The first 10 were built in the USA, the balance in South Africa. The size of the standard gauge here is clearly visible - Cape Gauge which is 3 foot, 6 inches. Which I guess in the USA would be classified as Narrow Gauge? Narrow gauge here is 2 foot...........

A great image, Kevin!
In the United States, Standard Gauge is 4 feet 8.5 inches (1,435mm), so Cape Gauge is narrow gauge to us. Don |

Another Platinum Train
Here is another platinum consist a bit further south.
This one is returning with empties and has 5 locos (18E Series 1 units) at the front. The unit at the front was built in 1981 and then rebuilt and upgraded in 2006. The rebuilds program included...

This is a really beautiful image, Kevin.
I often assemble and create on-line jigsaw puzzles with rail, steam traction, maritime, and aviation themes and exchange notes with some British rail and puzzle fans. https://www.jigidi.com/user/boosed This would be a perfect jigsaw puzzle image. Don |

Why would anyone throw rocks at or drop rocks on trains?
