Korean Turtle Ship

Good evening!

Recently, I began a new project. This one I brought from my last conference trip in Busan and I thought it would be a very appropriate souvenir.

It is a fairly simple model, when compared with some of the builds here, but it has a lot of room for improvement.

The Korean Turtle Ship or Geobukseon is a very unique vessel that has a significant historical importance in defending Korean waters from Japanese invaders and marauders.

This ship is considered to be the worlds first armored ship, dating from the early 15th century.

If there is any restriction against wooden models in the forum, please reply to this topic and I'll remove it immediately.

Best regards

Ed

No restrictions on wood Ed. After all, to quote Texman, "It's pre-paper".

I did , however, move your thread to Other Things We Do and Make since it is primarily made of something other than paper. Please don't take that as a criticism of your model. I think it's a cool subject. Been fascinated by these ships for years. Please continue, by all means.

That ship looks good.
A few years back there was a discussion about a paper version of the Turtle ship that was offered on a Korean website.

Once completed, will you be painting the model or leaving it as it is ?

Nearest I can get to that Doug, but it's only the start of a trail.

PAPERMAU: Korean Turtle Ship - by How Paper Cafe - Barco de Guerra Antigo

The How-paper-cafe website is in Korean, but I can't see the model.

Johnny, that listing on Papermau looks like the one in my archives.

That ebay listing looks interesting. Have to think on the $39.99 + shipping. Cheaper to here in the USA ($8.26) than to Wales ($24.31), though.

Good Evening folks,

Thanks vermin_king, n96hbk, scetoaux and john for your kind comments!

Thank you elliott for putting the thread on the right place!

And gotham, good question. I will paint it. I made a few tests and the model becomes much more "alive" when its coloured. I also intendo to replace the original wooden sails for paper or canvas.

I managed to work a little on it during the last weekend. For this model in particular, I'm counting with the help of the "commander" himself, my old man.

Last pictures weren't very promising, but with a little patience, we managed to fit the hull parts together with a perfect fit. The model is very good and the parts fit perfectly, but they need to be held together until the glue cures. Some parts require curving as well.

The following pictures show the lower hull (rectangular shape...not very hydrodynamic) and the supports for the cannons.

I hope you guys enjoy the pictures.

Best regards,

Ed
