No.15, Murph's B757, 1/72

Here we go again, airliner. No.15 is Murph's B757, at 1/72 as in his original design. The length of the model measures some 25.5 inches and creates another storage problem. However, it's very satisfying holding the finished model to see and to self-admire of making it happen.

Wow! 25.5 inches is a good size project for sure and I can only imagine the storage issues that this one created for you. But as you said, sometimes seeing the completed model and the satisfaction of making it happen outweighs the problem it creates. I've built a few huge ones in my day, mostly as a challenge to myself and my building skills to see if I could make it happen.

The biggest one I've ever built to date?

An 8 foot long MD-80 airliner:

Sometimes you just gotta have fun with it and follow it where ever it leads, even if you come out looking a little crazy!

Wow, that's really huge. Gigantic, I would say. Can imagine the man-hours you put in to build it.

You should find a gallery in Hong Kong and display all of these models, your choice of cans gives them an artistic look. Love this series so much!

Thanks, Josh, but HK is a money-minded world with very little real concern about arts. There’s only $$$$ on most people’s mind.

Just under a thousand man hours, papermate, but fortunately it was given a temporary home after I built it so i didn't immediately have to worry about talking it home. For a few years it hung proudly at one of the local businesses right next to the 6 foot long SR-71 Blackbird I built for the same group.

I have to agree with papermate, joshuajaesco. I've been building these things for well over 20+ years and even though I have had several in film and television and made some appearances in magazines such as Fine Scale Modeler and Star Wars Insider, its less about the arts and more about the money. When I first started, there was devoted core group of can builders who were seriously producing some great work. Many of them have retired from it all together and those that remain are not as active as they used to be. Can building is not like Paper or plastic modeling where there is a multitude of builders perpetuating the craft. With can artistry, those who still build are its only ambassadors and part of our goal is to further the art with the unique creations we build, whether we share them on forum such as this, or compete in local IPMS competitions...

Potentially No.16 work in progress. Simply design by Murph but not too easy to build it in cans.

The F-104 can be a prickly subject to build for sure. I did this gem with wing tanks a couple of summers ago:

I think the next time I do it, it will be in all silver and using Mike Bauer's giant F-104 pattern so my my big 3 foot F-15 Eagle Aggressor isn't lonely hanging over my work bench!
