Medieval Sword and Big Brothers/Big Sisters

I am building a prop sword for a pirate costume that I'll be wearing in a couple of weeks for a BB/BS bowling fundraiser. The sword is one that I downloaded some time ago from "Sheilas Models". At least that's what the folder that it's stored in says. Anyway I've made a start on it at least. I have the cross piece for the hilt done and added a tube rolled up from a toilet paper roll to make it easier to attach the rest of the handle and the blade. The oil can is not part of the sword.

I've also attached a photo of the pirate inspiration for my costume. The team name is "Vestal's Vengeance". And of course we will be sailing to the event in the pirate ship "Revenge". All of this will make sense (or nonsense) if you follow the link below. And if you do, please consider donating for the cause.

Thanks,

Curt

Good sword and a good cause.
I believe the website is this one:
Sheila's Papermodels

I built the trebuchet from there many years ago.

Wesley's sword is coming along nicely and I think it will be done in time for bowling on Saturday.

John, Thanks for the links to the Raven's Blight pirate projects!

Doug, Thanks for the link to Shelia's paper models. There are some very nice items there, including the trebuchet that you built so well

Here are some progress pics. I decided that the blade needed a strong support, both to stay straight and true, and to attach to the hilt. So I used a yard stick and did a lot of whittling to get it to a blade shape. I still used the paper parts to skin the stick and to get the proper shape of the blade. I did use cereal box card as a reinforcement for the blade so that it would not be to badly distorted. I don't expect a perfect result. Just one that's good enough to be a costume prop item.

The blade will need a final outer cover or maybe just paint. I will post pics of the final product and maybe even of me in costume.

The sword is done, and just in time for tomorrow's event. Here are the last couple of photos. I decided to cover the blade rather than paint it. At first I tried to use a frosted silver gift wrap paper as a covering. It wrinkled badly so I went instead with a frosted silver paper from LCI. That worked really well, as you can see in the last photo. The final result is far from perfect, but it will be just fine for the intended purpose.

I follow a lot of Cosplay and prop makers, and what they use to give a metallic look to not metal swords is the aluminum tape used for air conditioner ducts (Not Duck tape).

Certainly looks good enough to bowl them over at tomorrow's event.

We are rooting for Vestal's Vengeance

So the event raised over $50,000 dollars for the local Big Brothers/Big Sisters group and was a great deal of fun. We didn't get any pics at the bowling alley, but did take one at home. That way I got to include the world's most adorable dog.
