Modeling Desk, build and setup
I've been away from modeling now for a few years, due to just not having the space to set up an area for my models and equipment, I moved onto some other ways to spend my spare time, waiting for a chance to get back into this awesome hobby.
Due to a recent house move, I am finally able to dedicate some space to a permanent modeling workshop, better than I've ever had before. Instead of sticking to my tired old plastic drawers full of tools and accessories, I decided to build a set of shelves to hold everything which would sit at the back of the table. Instead of building the shelves from scratch, which was my original plan, I found an old bookcase thathad seen better days and decided to use it as a base. All it needed was a couple of extra shelves, which I made out of some cheap plywood to keep the cost down. Originally, I wasn't expecting these shelves to turn out looking very nice so I didnt bother taking any before shots, which I now regret. Here is the book case with the two added shelves and a couple of dividers. I also cut into the existing shelves to create a slight indent, allowing for a slightly larger work area. After this, all I was going to do was apply a stain/varnish to the new shelves so they wouldn't stand out so much but then I decided to sand the outside of the bookcase and varnish that too, because it had seen better days and deserved a bit of attention. It was then that I noticed the bookcase had a nice woodgrain finish. It's actually just MDF with a woodgrain finish glued to it, but it cleaned up really well after a good sanding, so I went the whole hog and sanded the whole thing... and bought a bigger can of stain-varnish, in a darker walnut colour. I'm more than happy with how it turned out, it looks a lot better sitting on the table than it would've. Now I'm tempted to do the table in the same colour. And with everything in place, it looks ready for some serious modeling, I can't wait to get back into it. I'll be resurrecting my last unfinished project shortly, while waiting on the arrival of a special kit I ordered, to celebrate being able to start building again. |

Nice job Nick! I see your talents extend to more than card modeling. There are two chairs in front of the desk; are we looking at a couple working together or a father-child team effort?

Nice setup. My basement and attic are crammed with shelves. Funny thing about shelves ... there's always something to fill them up in almost no time at all.
Happy modeling

Setup
Ah, that setup is the stuff of dreams.
Mine is a TV table that I break down and put away after. Keeps me from getting carried away ;-)

Beautiful workmanship and a beautiful workspace.
Padraig - you sure produce some fine models from that ephemeral workspace. Don |
