Here is a similar idea on an old Lockheed Vega which Standard Oil flew.

Newer cast vinyls used for wraps are in the 4mil range.
Weight is the same, on a car, if not more than a normal paintjob.
Wraps are temporary...short life...whoever told you they last longer than paint is very wrong.

We use and install calendared vinyls which i think are more durable.
This what we print on....and laminate.
But mostly for flat wraps. Truck sides, etc
To properly conform and wrap a vehicle body, cast vinyls are the only choice.
You also need to be careful about who prints the wraps and how.
There are a lot of crappy methods out there.
I think its all solvent printing with UV special qualities.

In cut vinyl, you could apply 1.5 - 2 mil vinyls and get 2- 5 years out of them.
I am not up on how vinyl fairs on aircraft.
Different exposure and environmental effects.

I think your design is a bit busy.
The wings could use less parts...make each part thicker, wider, etc
I like the size of the side coverage, but the design is all over the place...very confusing.
You also don't need those claws (in my opinion).
A larger beak and more solid head would be better too.
Just ideas.

Mike, I still think the body needs to be bigger. I don't have time right now as I would like to show you what I mean, but if you are not in a rush.....

I agree with Dave re the use vinyls - so many advantages. I also totally agree with his redesign suggestions as well.

Rendition #6

Ok, tonight I re-worked the body.

Thinking about the comments, will check out a few of them this weekend.

I kind'a want the wings to be abstract but still, feel like feathers. Feathers are tight and lots of them. When painting or doing vinyl, probably will be easier to thin them out. Will take and re-draw them to see how much can be removed.

The body has had a complete re-do on this version. From beak to tail!

Once I'm happy with the body, on the real plane it will be lowered and then rolled underneath the planes belly: Reason why is that my plane has the wings on the bottom of the fuselage, not a mid wing or high wing, an eagle wings are "high" wings. They just don't mesh! So will lower the eagle graphic to at least a mid-wing eagle. The claws will be on the bottom of the fuselage, that is why I'm keeping them.

On the final shape once I build a 3d model, that is when I'll decide to keep of remove the claws and also the final size of the body.

This is a work in progress, willing to try changes, and the ideas have me wondering if this design is going to work if I increase the body more than it is. Will experiment more with the body this weekend as well.

Thank you all for the comments!

Been doing some searching on the internet. Found a vinyl cutter that can cut 28" wide rolls for $219 re-built. Problem is shipping to Alaska will cost $600. Looks like it can cut cardstock as well.

Studying about vinyl, yes the new cast is the way to go, can buy different grades, some last 2-years, some 5-8 years and finally if you want to spend $2200.00 you can buy a roll that is 150 ft that supposedly is permanent.

Interesting stuff!

Also been looking at using stencils to paint it on-yes, still looking at that option. Can get a tack spray adhesive that will allow a stencil to be tacked to the wings, etc., painted and then removed. This could save a bunch of taping. However: there is going to be lots of cutting. Might just buy one of those vinyl cutters...

Not going to be a cheap project, 4-wing surfaces, and 2 fuselage sides plus the belly. Lots of paint or lots of vinyl. Wingspan is 23 ft, nose to tail is 20 ft.

Will try your wing thinning idea this weekend, new rendition the beak and head have changed tonight.

Thanks for the ideas! You know more about graphic design than I do for sure!

Wish I had a high wing! That must of been a beautiful airplane to see back then. Wow!

Kevin, lots of time before I can afford either paint or vinyl. Looking forward to see what you got planned.

Thanks for your input.

New Rendition

Here is the latest rendition. Major changes.
1) Per Dave recommendation removed some of the feathers from the wings.
2) Tail feathers are now just red outlines
3) Scaled and moved head to better fit the engine cowling
4) Head cape has been adjusted to fit the fuselage better.

Notice I removed the red from where the wing tip is shown on the fuselage view, wouldn't see that on the real plane, so removed the graphic. I added an ivory color to simulate the color already on my RV, it doesn't show up well.

Planning on making a small model now to see how everything looks.

Anyway here is a look at the latest rendition:

Made Paper Model to Test Graphic Look

Created a model of a Vans RV-6 homebuilt airplane. Now I can try the different looks to see how they will look.

Even took a photo of my actual RV and then used autocad to apply the graphic, problem is I had to print and then scan to get a photo to show, not the best quality but here it is:

Using Model Design Skills For Airplane Paint Job-acad-paint-graphic-rv-6-photo-scan-copy.jpg

Here are a few photos of different designs tried so far. Some use Dave's suggestion to expand the tail feathers onto the tail. Notice I cut and pasted the paper to give a look at how it will appear with the wings and elevator on.

Here a couple of other tries, Revision 15 is where I'm at now, the first photo is the tail feathers extended and angled with feathers on the Rudder and elevator; Revision 14:

As you can see the RV model is a "convertible". The canopy is giving me fits to design, not having the best of luck using 2D skills. Compound curves and bubble shape, way beyong my design abilities...
