Impressive is the word all right. You've got a flair for this type of work Al; always glad to see a new thread from you.

At one time I knew older gentlemen who restored old tube radios to original working shape,he stopped doing it sometime in 90s when source of parts dried up or became too expensive.Last I heard he passed away few years back.

Magic eye-I have seen some tube radios have those. What's the deal with them? Some practical purpose or vogue of the time?

Magic eye

The Magic eye aided tuning. It was a bit like a neon light. When fully tuned in, best signal, it was a full green circle. As signal strength fell the circle decreased.

Heres a link with the tech stuff:

All About Magic Eye Tubes

Heres a video of one working:

For this radio I made a new magic eye out of square leds. If you click on the link below it will take you to Flickr and a video of my led magic eye working. Not as good as the real thing but it’s cool.

Click this link below for my magic eye video:

Here's a pic of my home made magic eye:

As for the old tubes, they are becoming very rare although they can be got.

Enjoy

Just found this. Missed it somehow.

A great restoration and a very interesting set of posts on how you did it. Thank you!

Al, it's about time.

As I watched your restoration I was amazed by you problem solving ability. Did this masterpeace end up in a museum?

Museum

Hi Jim

Not just yet. I’m back home for Christmas and I’m hoping a friend can make me some small speakers that look like old RAF Tannoy speakers. These connected to the radio should look and sound great. A few more tweaks to the tuner this weekend but she’s about there.

Speakers:

I’ll keep you posted bud.

As for a museum, this baby is mine although a museum has asked me to renovate their radio and the associated T1154 transmitter which I will do next year.

Enjoy
