Origami Cranes

I have been folding some origami cranes lately.
The first picture is a set of cranes in various sizes. The larger one is from a 6 in x 6 in (15.2 cm x 15.2 cm) square of paper, the smallest is from a 1 in x 1 (2.54 cm x 2.54) cm square of paper.

This picture shows the smallest crane I have been able to fold so far. It is from a 3/4 in x 3/4 in (1.9 cm x 1.9 cm) square of paper.

That's pretty neat, Doug.

Thanks, Philip.

Here is another pic.
The large crane is from a 12 in/30.5 cm square, the small cranes are from a 0.75 in/1.9 cm square.

Hey Doug - nice work.

I particularly like the tiny crane - a man after my own heart!

I used to try to make tiny origami things with tweezers and cigarette paper - once upon a time - but with limited success. Fun trying though!

small but perfectly formed.

A museum near us had a Hugh number of paper birds on a christmas tree. It seems they were all made by the in-mates of the local prison!

I've been making some much easier birds that take about 5 minutes each. It struck me that spending 10 minutes a day making them instead of papermodels I could have over 700 to put on our tree this Christmas later later this year! But on the other hand "life's to short"..... and I'm not in prison ......yet!

Kevin- I tried making one out of a 12.7 mm square but it did not work out. Probably need to find the right kind of paper for that.

Mike- Yeah, stay out of prison. It does not take very long to fold the larger origami cranes. The small ones need a bit more work mainly to get the folds correct in such a small piece of paper. 1000 birds on a tree sound nice.

For tiny origami, try Japanese foil-backed paper - it's very thin and keeps creases forever (once I tried US-made foil paper but it was thicker and the metallic stuff was prone to flaking off when creases were inverted).
I don't know how it's where you live, but here in Brazil cigarette packs have an inner lining of foil-backed paper, usually thin and with a nice embossed texture. On the other hand, I have seen foil gift-wrapping stuff sold as "paper", really thin but plastic-like thus rather unsuited for origami.
Regarding really tiny origami, there are record-obsessed folders who use purely metallic foil and needle-thin tweezers - you must see it to believe the result.
