So it seems. For some reason, 640-pixel-width images that I insert into Word documents come out teeny-tiny. This is a new phenomenon to me. But they look just fine in the Forum, based on this test.

Is the software expecting the images to be 300 dpi?

The forum accepts images up to 250kb, 640 pixel width and 480 pixel height.

I have no idea about the dpi parameters.

It's not about physical size -- it's about resolution density. A standard print setting for images is 300 dpi. There may be a variable or setting in your Word document that expects images at this resolution. On Windows machines, standard screen resolution is 96 dpi. So if you put these two things together, your printed (screen resolution) images will be around one third the size you are expecting on the page.
I don't know if this is the case, but it's the first thing I'd look at. HTH.
