Those would be cellulose Balls.
Foam Balls are made from ...wait for it....wait...wait...foam!

Kinda like asking Santa if he has glass balls.
Obviously not...his are satin wrapped.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foam

from a materials science standpoint, foam refers to the structure of a material, not the chemicals that compose the solid portion. Foam generally refers to a material that has a substantial portion of voids, generally filled with gases.

Foams can be composed of ceramic, plastic, metals or, as many of us here are familiar, beer.

There is no reason cellulose foam shouldn't be considered foam

Theres no reason Pluto isn't considered a Planet any more...you just have to accept it.

The day my Beer has metal foam on it...is the day I give up driving.

Man, I didn't think to check Amazon. I went on a little shopping tour yesterday and found some hobby pearls in the right size (2mm). They are the best I could do. But I think I will try these foam ball too as the pearls are not fully round. I'll have pics soon once I got the updates added.

For now this is the progress on the texturing.

I want to add that little wedge in the back that was used to control the angle of the barrel. And then I will try adding the pearls (or whatever I find suitable in the end).

Also I will make an easy version, if someone wants to equip his ship with 32 cannons and no time :-)

Here is a little update with the tiny additions I made. On the end of the barrel I have glued a black painted 2mm handcraft pearl. And then I made the wedge and added a little sphere I baked out of FIMO and then painted.

I checked the foam balls but sadly Amazon will not ship them to Austria. I found a shop for RC cars that had small steel balls. I got a couple of sizes and will test them too in the future. For now I am happy with the result and will build more cannons when I make some ships for them!

While working on the easy (low detail) version I was able to make it "fold-flat". Very important to gamers who need to store their huge collection of terrain bits or transport them safely to the next gaming location.

For the easy version I compressed all the details into the texture. That way I was able to squash the parts flat. I also made the barrel just four sided.

To assemble you squeeze the barrel into the right shape and then insert the back end piece. For the gun carriage again you squeeze and tuck in the back flap (inspired by the wedge) to keep it in the right form.

I will go for the detailed version for my ship(s) but I am very happy that I also found this solution!

Paint em black and boom!
Or you can use ball bearings from a mechanical shop or pellets from shotgun cartridges

I made some alternate color skins (rusty red and copper patina green/blue; the latter probably for a ghost ship!) and now I am working on building a lot of cannons so I can populate a deck of a ship!

Here I have completed 8 carriages. The cannon balls in the back I made out of Fimo and then painted black.

To help with the assembly of the wheels I have made this little tool :-)

Now I need to make some gun barrels! :-)
