Apollo Astronaut on the Moon

To all you space junkies out there:

First I want to thank Nando for inspiring me to do this next project.

I am taking a different approach to the design of the paper astronaut..

To see what I am doing, please check out my design thread in "Other Things we do and Make" in another area of the forum.

Ken

OK, I am back,

I had a few setbacks on the scanning method.... the COST was way more than anticipated.

But, the project will proceed anyway.

Here is the start of the boot assembly. The sole of the boot...

Looks good, but shouldn't it say ANDY in marker?

Next step:

The gray part that rests just inside the sole, and is part of the outer boot. It forms into a ring and there are tabs that glue it to the underside.

For reference - the boot is 3 inches long. The astronaut will be 1:4 scale, or 16.5 inches tall.

Progress Report:

The pictures will tell the story better than words. All of the parts so far are laminated on to .033 inch cardboard - cereal box. The only exception is the piece of paper (picture 4) that represents the inner boot. It is crinkled up and then placed inside the boot; then glued around the inside of the rim.

The remaining parts are then built up and wrapped against the crinkled paper.

The inner structure is designed to ensure that the boot comes out to the final height and that all of the upper boot parts form up the correct shape.

The remaining lower boot parts are added on top and wrapped around the crinkled paper.

I still have to add the upper boot (cuff) to the top, then add the straps.

Very interesting approach, Ken, and a great build. the segmented way you build up the shoe gives you lots of good ways to get all the complex shapes right. It makes me very curious seeing the rest!
Good luck!

I just finished the upper part of the boot. I think I need to change the color of blue on the sole though. It's seems too bright. The color should be more of a gray; with a small hint of blue. But I think the shape is correct. Next, I will add the straps.

I'm guessing (and hoping) that this will be available at Ecardmodels when you finish?
