Thorsten's 1:48 shuttle project (Where I got my cockpit from, I also plan to use his main engines and star trackers) is available for download on my Space Paper Models yahoo group. You need membership to view/download files, but making an account is no big deal. Space-Paper-Models : space paper models
Fortezza's webpage is sadly not available anymore, although you can still download his shuttle through the wayback machine. Home Page di MARS Center -= Microgravity Advanced Research and Support Center =- If for some reason, it doesn't work (Wayback machine has given me issues before) I can email them to you. As soon as my reskinned model of Fortezza's shuttle is finished, I plan to release it on the Yahoo group (Both the 1:24 and maybe also in 1:48) |

Rescaled?
Spaceguy, I assume you rescaled Fortezza's shuttle to 1:48 scale, yes?

Yeah, it scales very nicely to 1:48. There's just a few minor issues with decals (Such as the NASA logo)

I decided to change a few things up: Instead of doing the retexturing now, I'm going to go ahead and start building the framework for the mid fuselage/payload bay. Later I plan to glue another retextured sheet over it--which will also add strength. Gluing 2-4 sheets of cardstock together makes it extremely sturdy, even in large sizes. I also got some ribbon with different sizes/textures. I want to try experimenting with adding texture to the payload bay/AFRSI blankets. I also got some shiney silver ribbon to use as the radiators. It's really convenient because the ribbon is 1/4 in wide, which is exactly the width of each section of the radiator in Fortezza's model after I resize it. Just the structure of the mid fuselage is going to take about 20 sheets, but I'm really excited to start building it. It's a shame, I almost won a 44in high-quality poster printer from a gov surplus auction (Ironically, from NASA) for almost nothing. Sadly, someone outbid me by $150. That would have helped a lot for this o.-

Perhaps I've bitten off a bit more than I can chew, but it sure does taste good <_< The radiators turned out much better than I thought they would, although making them was also about 10 times as tedious as I thought it would be. After working a few hours, I got half of them finished. As you can see, it took quite a bit of paper just to make one side of the frame of the mid fuselage (The rest of the mid fuselage will still take 6 more sheets). As soon as I finish that, I'm going to try tackling the payload bay. After that, the engine compartment. In just 1-48, the engine compartment took quite a bit of paper so I'm a little afraid to see how it works out. As usual, I have my 1:48 orbiter and a ruler for size reference although you can already tell this will take up a whole bed.

I got the mid fuselage framework finished and also installed the battery, switch, and wiring. I decided to place the battery and switch in the right landing gear well (Later I'll deal with making the door open/close). For the mid fuselage, warping was a huge issue. I finally got the sides at least mostly straight after glueing two sets of 3/16in dowels on both sides and affixing the outer part. I also used cardboard, although it wasn't as effective as I hoped. Here's some more pictures:
