RESIN 1/72 XSL-01 coming...where's the paper??

Gang,

A resin 1/72 XSL-01 is on tap for December. See:

Maybe one of our intrepid designers could beat them to it with a card model? We already have the Moonship, "just" need the boosters.

Yes, and the Resin Kit is $185! And the launch-pad isn't like the original, and no interior in the Lunar section.

I recently found an article on a French Forum. The fellow was "reclaiming" an old XSL-01 plastic kit, some parts were missing or broken. He decided to mix paper and plastic modelling to rebuild it. But he went a step further and constructed all the stages. Apparently Revell cut the height of the original concept model to keep the price down (it sold for $1.98 in 1957) and to make it fit in a standard box.

The modeller is Jan Kytop.

I would love to do the whole thing in paper/card, if possible.

Here is the link where you can see it with all four stages:

Hi!

Yes, there are several of the "Moon Ship" alone, just like the later Revell Releases (No Boosters).

But now that I've seen it, what I really want to do is the *original* design concept. Apparently Revell eliminated a whole stage to keep down costs and make the kit fit a standard size package. Note in the photo that there is an entire stage there that does not exist in the production Revell XSL-01.

Jan Kytop used paper components to supplement the kit parts (plastic) and add the stage back. So what he ended up with was the far more realistic looking design with four stages.

What I am after, here, is a full paper design. I don't have the design skills, but I am hoping one of the contributing designers will pick up the challenge!

The plastic/paper hybrid is shown by Jan on the French Forum (text in French) at:

What's needed...

So, John Leslie has the "Moon Ship" aka the descent stage.

And the four booster stages are essentially cylinders. Here's where it gets tough for someone like me - I'm a builder, not a designer.

The intricate part of this model is that the fin and wings of the descent stage meet with the slanted cone-tops of the boosters.

The cones are not included in the "Moon Ship." So they are need parts. Note how the "Moon Ship's" fin slots into one of the booster tops, and the wings slot into two more.

For much detail on this design, and photos of both the Revell Kit, and the extended designs, go here:
