Well guys, I have a little more time this weekend, so I am hoping to get the heatshield and outer shell finished...
I was going to do the forward observation windows next, but the shape of the openings are not quite right... so the next logical step was the outer shell - to develop the closeouts to fill the gaps between the crew compartment and outer shell. Here is the start of the heatshield. The first picture is the intended color. It isn't really red! There are probably dozens of methods one could use to grind out the crop circles and fill/sand paint; but this is a prototype; not worth the extra time spent. If the future builder assembles straight from the pages, this is what builder will get. The shape is now correct; much better than the original popcorn bowl I started out with... Ken

This morning, I added the locating ring inside of the heatshield. The purpose of the ring is to concentrically locate the lower compartment onto the heatshield. The slightly-angled down flange of the ring serves to allow the assembly to easily slip into the hole, but effectively grips/seats the compartment snug against the bottom.

There are 3 layers of thick paper that will nest into each other to form the outer shell. What you see here is the outer layer.
It seems that all of the details underneath are lined up pretty good. The gap between the heatshield and the outer shell will be filled with rings; part of which will be the upper edge of the heatshield. This is what will allow the outer shell to be removed to expose the crew compartment. Ken

I finished assembling the 3 layers, and lower interface rings.., AND...
the fit is not quite right yet. Believe it or not, I am just one thickness of paper too small on the diameter of the outer shell, and she won't seat all the way down as designed. This is how tight the tolerances are on this model! I will be redoing the outer shell next... Ken

Toooo sweet. The heat shield look's exactly like the shield for scotts merc.
Are you planning to glue the three layers together? The reason I ask is I thougt the double sided tape might work well here. You can get it as thin as scotch tape. Also gluing causes the paper to deform and wrinkle. When I built the heat shield for the merc I doubled the paper for strength and had this problem.

On the fit tolerances, make sure the final sheets indicate the type of card/paper to use for each part ... Yogi (shims are your friend ...) |
