1/24 Pioneer 11

Gang,

Here's my latest WIP: Ton's 1/24 Pioneer 10/11 spacecraft. I'm building mine as Pioneer 11, the first probe to fly by both Jupiter and Saturn.

So far, I've replaced the printed foil details with actual gold and aluminum foil. I didn't like how the kit support for the high-gain antenna turned out, so I scratchbuilt the parts from styrene rod. I've also added plastic bits to represent some of the instruments the Pioneers carried.

More to come. Biggest remaining challenge is building and mounting the two Radioactive Thermal Generators (RTGs) and their support arms.

Stay tooned!

Very nice! I've always liked the looks of the Pioneers and you are doing them justice....

Nice work so far!
I made a resin/PE kit one year ago of the probe and did quite a lot of research for it, if you need help with details or measurements, let me know and I'll do my best to help you.

Thanks for the offer, Thorsen. The only thing I'm unclear on is the mounting struts for the asteroid-meteoroid detector box. You have anything on those? Also, are they round rods or rectangular bars?

Mucho thanx!

Les,

as far as I can tell, all struts are round.

Here is the general arrangement drawing I made, some details are missing in some views, and I modified the PE part for the struts you asked to be printeable for your model, this is the second pdf (scaling bars are cm).

I couldn't find any photo of this area which shows these in all detail, but I think I figured them out the right way. Take care, some pics available at NASA sites show a test model, which has two more struts reaching towards the HGA-side of the spacecraft bus.

Here are some pics of my finished model, probably they can help, too:

Probably I should do a paper model of this too...

One more question, Thorsten...what are the fold lines in the drawing for? Do the folded parts end up at a 90 degree angle? Something else?

Maybe I'm just dense....

Sorry, should have explained it better:

Look at the side view in the general drawing, where the box is shown. The struts have to be folded at the angles as you see in this view.

Here is a diagram which shows the position and folding of the part:

Does this help?

Hey Les, How's the build going? This one's very high up my to-do list, too, I'm curious to see the next part of the process!
