International Space Station 1:50
Hell everyone!
I want to introduce my self: My name is Robert, I'm from Austria, living near our beautiful Vienna. I am very interested in spacefaring so it is of no wonder that I'm trying to add a new toy to my flat: a 1:50 ISS Diorama. I read a lot of your articles for weeks - guys you are great! So many ideas an passionism in here... thats motivating. But as I tried the first model from axm - Soyuz for starters - I found that even the 1:100 scale is too small for me. That has several reasons: 1st) My fingers get too clammy when trying to build the periscope. The cube with 1mm edge is terrifying - even when I tried with a tweezer! 2nd) The result was a tiny little Soyuz ship (nice textures!!!), but when I put it at display on my bookshelf... well, I wanted more. 3rd) I am generally addicted to megalomania So, when I figured out the dimensions of a 1:100 ISS, the whole thing would be about one meter length, and approx. half a meter width/depth. Thats a nice thing, but where these should be hung up - there is more space left! A two meter - one/one meter scaled replica would fit perfectly So, with the greatest respect to the meant purpose of the 1:100 scale models from axm, I doubled the prints in size and began constructing - guess what - a Soyuz again. Now I passed the periscope, the space ship looks great (and my delusions of grandeur are satisfied). So I've got my trip to the station, which I will build up in the time coming. At first I wanted to build it step by step, as it was done in the different configurations through build-up, but that would be more work in reconfiguration that in constructing the station. Your a man after my own heart. I have built the ISS 4 times, 3 in 1:100 scale and once in 1:144 scale. I have always wanted to do it in 1:50. Looking forward to seeing lots of pictures of your build. |

Welcome, Robert! Should be an amazing project if you're using Alphonso's parts/graphics. Biggest problem at that size is display. My 1:40 ISS (very basic graphics) in the downloads section here (real space, manned) has a page on how I built an internal armature to hold the whole thing together - it's directly over people's heads all day, just college students but still ...

Thanks for your nice reply's! I will post some pics as I have a favourable background (my desk is a very busy place ) @Yogi: Thanks for the tip with the PVC pipe. I found some at our hardware store - one inch in diameter, that should fit. For the inner structure I got some ideas, as well as for hangin' it up from the ceiling. There will be three main structures. The pressurized parts (russian and american) will have seperate tubes inside, due to the lack of lineup of those sections. The seperation will be in Node-2, I will look how I can connect both PVC tubes inside that module. The unpressurized structure will have one tube from one end to the other. The main problem there will be the S3/P3 segments of the truss... I can't hide the pipe inside there. An I have no idea how I can manage it to make the huge solar arrays pivotable (at the S3/S4 and P3/P4 cinjunction). I thought about a steel bolt, which I can connect to the PVC tubing easily. Maybe it is not that obvius when the bolt is only 1/4 inch diameter? I'm open to ideas anyway The structure will then be hung up at multiple points on the tubing through nylon wires to a wooden cross mountet at the ceiling. As talking about wood: that will also strengthen the solar array structure wich is almost half a metre long! Currently I finished Soyuz and Im' now building the HTV-1 and the Zvezda module. Hi Robert,
For the truss you could try and find a transparent PVC tube. And perhaps you could even try and modify the inner structure of the outer truss parts to let them rotate around that tube instead of weaker pivoting platforms inbetween the segments. For instance, if you make those #5 and #6 truss parts with a tight rolled paper end on both sides, they might be able to rotate freely around the PVC tube inside. The solar panels could be reinforced by one long rod which bends over and halfway round the tube to the other side so it stays one strong piece. The PMA between the US part and the Russian part makes the station parts indeed different in height but you might be able to connect the two by using a smaller rod which protrudes through the airlock part of the PMA into both sections. The two tubes in which it ends could have inner circles through which that rod will go and keeps the two parts together. (This might not all be as clear as I hoped it to be...I could make a small drawing of it if you want to..) |

For the PMA between the US part and the Russian part you could always heat the PVC pipe and bend it to shape, I have had to do that before. I used a head gun and it worked great but if you are going to use an open flame you need to keep rolling the PVC around and moving it back and forth, you don't want to leave the PVC in one place too long or it will melt threw or catch fire.

Hi!
Well, the idea with the #6 and #6 parts is great, if I could find a transparent PVC tube. The idea with an inner paper tube was there, before I found that great PVC tube. Paper holds much load if folded an rolled correctly! But at those distances I have to overcome, paper has its limits. For the Node-2 joint of the tubing - I have an idea of what you mean. But as I will hang that thing up on multiple ponits af the tubes, I'm not sure if it is nessecary to connect both tubes. All parts will be connected via nylon wiring to the wooden cross overhead. Here on earth we have that bad thing called gravity... *g* Greeting, Robert |
