Paper Replika Astronaut
Hey guys, here's my latest project.
Before I dive into Ken West's masterpiece Neil and Buzz models, I wanted to get some experience building human figures, as it was something I'd never attempted before, so I tried my hand at the astronaut kit available at Paper Replika. With a little help from Ken and Billy Leliveld, I was able to tweak and complete the kit. Overall I'm pretty happy with it. Had I done my homework before I started the build, I could have made it a little better and a little more accurate, but we live and we learn. It may be hard to see, but I made a little "moonscape" stand to mount him on. It makes for a nice little diorama. I'm in the process of redesigning some of the components to let me take another run at it. My wife wants me to make another one (or two -- Neil and Buzz!) to use as Christmas ornaments for our eclelctic tree, so I think I'm going to do that. Apologies for the lack of pictures. My computer is having "issues", and this collage is was put together by my wife on her iPad. I'm thankful to her for doing that for me. Mike |

Mike,
I had bought Kens Apollo Astronauts a couple of months ago. I did most of the boots (thats where you begin) already. If your going to start a build thread .....maybe I can jump on the bandwagon! We could build them together. So if you do, let me know. Besides....it would give me a break in between working on my LEM. Bill

Thank you, guys!
Ken, your build thread is helping me come up with mods to make this model more accurate such that my Christmas ornaments should come out nicely. Vette -- I'm not currently working on Ken's Neil and Buzz. In fact, I'm helping pay down the US debt by participating in "The Great Furlough of 2013", so I'm conserving my cash, and haven't bought them yet. Given that, please don't let me hold up your build. |

Billy,
He's in the neighborhood of 1/14th scale, give or take a little. |

Before I do Ken's model I did the Paper Replika model with some added details I did myself.
I thought the scale was 1/12 Paper-Replika Astronaut 1/12 scale Here is a picture of my model and the one from the site My model is on the right |

Joe,
The original most likely is 1/12th. For reasons I can't remember -- probably a lack of A4 paper, I copied all the pages into PowerPoint, which ended up shrinking the model a little. Beautiful build, by the way. What did you do for the faceplate and helmet? It looks remarkable. |

I used a Christmas ornament for the faceplate. I covered the helmet and suit with white paper towels. |
