Thanks, Luke!
I think I can manage now I have done two of the CCB's without leaving parts behind. It might be an idea though for those who come later and look for details to see some here. I'd say, post them here if you will. And have fun in Indiana. |

Good lord, Luke - nice pix. But your just encouraging P-K to make this build even more awesomely detailed (as if he needs encouragement).

Great pictures! and a complete walkaround, so all important parts are shown. Wonderful. What a weathered beast that is, by the way. You really can see those things weren't made for the outdoors and certainly not to last.
The engine bell usually has this protective structure around its base but I think for the sake of displaying it has been removed. Like David said earlier in this thread, the engine bell's insides are grey after ignition and ablation of the cork. The outside of the engine is -besides ablated- also quite weathered. Thanks for posting! (oh - and Yogi: it isn't getting any more detailed than I already have. It would mean I have to do two CCB's all over again.) Thanks for the pictures, Luke. Have saved all of them for my own future superdetail of my own kit!

You're quite correct that this sucker looks very weathered... the insulating foam looks particularly weathered... you can actually see handprints and fingerprints and stuff pressed into the foam insulation, and the weathering is slowly causing it to "crumble away" to dust, bit by bit. Still, it's a beautiful bird, even if it was just a fitout test article, and I was glad to see it. I just wish they'd have had an Atlas V right beside it! Later! OL JR

My build steadily (but slowly) continues. There's still some work to do but the end of this build is in sight. I already have some ideas for a (hopeful) quick inbetweenie afterwards and there's something bigger coming up, too. For the time being the Delta IV nears its completion. The engine section of the second CBC still has to be made, the engine bell is ready. Then the assembly of the three booster cores will follow.

Finished!
Well, there we are then. She's finished. I am pleased with the end result although there is one small error at the bottom. First the good stuff.
It again was a very very enjoyable build, Mark again made a great model with this one. It looks great when built straight out of the printer, it looks even greater when you tinker a little with the skins. I used textured paper to print the orange hull parts on and it very much improves the reality of the CBC's appearance, in my opinion. The RS-86 engine bells all got some aluminium sticky tape as shielding which also looked quite good. Like I said before, this kit needs reinforcement inside and Mark provided us in the downloads section with a nice sheet of circles for this big lady. I used florist wire for the struts on the top section to hold the three CBC's together. I painted them white and red before glueing. The small disappointment was all my fault. Getting a bit less concentrated and a bit hasty to get this one finished, I appeared to have messed up the exact placement of the connecting bits at the bottom of the third CBC. I should have checked it with the other two to get it right but I don't know what went wrong exactly. Oh well. I am far from perfect, Q.E.D. (-; Up next is an inbetweenie. Something that sleeps in a hole in the ground and rises with a loud bang in a bellow of yellow smoke. PS. Sorry for the bit grainy quality of the pictures. It was getting dark here already. I can feel we're heading toward autumn again. I hope for one last indian summer period.. Last edited by Paper Kosmonaut; 09-02-2012 at 01:46 PM. |
