MSL Diorama 1/48

Well well, another build of mister Paper Kosmonaut. Is he on a roll or what? I guess he is. He is talking about himself in third person, so he must be on a roll.

Here we have a pretty picture frame with a red sandy rocky landscape. Must be Mars. It should look like it, anyway. It's going to be the base for my next build, the landing of Curiosity with Sky Crane hovering over the rover.

Sometime back in March, I made a test build of Yogi's Sky Crane, almost straight out of the printer (as in out of the box) with only some tiny additions. I added a little framework to the rockets made from bent staples.
Oh, and of course I reduced the whole kit 50% to 1/48. Because.
So here's the first leg of this build.
The Sky Crane is a very easy to build, well fitting kit. the fuel tanks of course are not as round as they are in reality but in this build I tried to follow the original kit. It doesn't bother me that much, especially not in this scale. The whole kit was painted silver in the end.

Now I have started on the building of Curiosity. I reduced the kit to 25% to get the size down to 1/48. That will be up next.

And the aeroshell (crashing to Mars well outside the frame ... dang) is already at 1:48. This is gonna be good.

Well, yes, that aeroshell will be just a little too far off my diorama frame...
On with the build. I started with Curiosity. While there are some good pictures of the rover online, I decided to try and follow Zoltan's build of the vehicle. So I also made some coolant tubes on the radiator and thickened the place where the drive train is attached to the body. it is all a bit small and so I cannot do all of the detailing I want but it is fun again to work in a reduced scale. useful for some upcoming projects I have in mind. One of them related to this post by David S.F. Portree's blog "Beyond Apollo". That later, here now first some pictures of what I am trying not to mess up.

Great work so far. But it looks like it will soon be time for a new cutting mat....

It still cuts fine, David. It's the macro-setting on my camera that makes it look this horrible, I think. (-;

Hi Jasper.

It is encouraging and valuable pictures. I have the 1/20 proved too small, but you certainly build the 1/48,

Ah yes... Skylab and space shuttle. Very interesting concept. However, even if STS had been in time to raise Skylab's orbit, the old outpost would not have been very usefull. Studies performed by NASA after it's re-entry showed that thermal control onboard the station had not been all that great during the years it had been abandoned, resulting in permanent damage to some of it's core systems. And since none of those systems were designed to be replaced on-orbit...
That, and the experiences from the Russians with their Salyut's and Mir was one of the primary drivers behind the design rationale used for the USOS part of the ISS: to have ORU's for just about every major component of the station.

Then again, there's only 9 parts for just the aeroshell (10 if you duplicate the former ring for a separate shell and heat shield) - put it on a stiff wire above the frame ...?

Thing is, I try to give my dioramas a hint of realism. if I hang the aeroshell over the sky crane, all of the reality of the action is pulled out of perspective.
That's why I won't include the aeroshell in this diorama.
However, for educational purposes, it might be a very good way to demonstrate how the descent happens, though.
I made the aeroshell earlier this year, used photo paper for the solar panels of the cruise stage, wrapped the tanks (beads) in chocolate paper and built it in 1/48.

Woods, good info on Skylab. Things I have always asked myself, too.
