As best I recall, the colors changed during the course of the shuttle's history; I was able to find photos of the Atlantis mission I modeled and the ASTC on its RSRMs was a tan color.

It is dense reading, but here is one technical paper on them: https://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/c...9940012651.pdf

And, oddly enough, unused segments show up on eBay from time to time: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Space-Shutt...p2047675.l2557
Thanks David for the great information and sources.

I'm not only interested in how the details look like, but as a former researcher I also want to understand their structures and construction, the materials used, technical correlations, etc. ...

I used to think that they were solid materials, and in this sence it sounds rather unbelievable, that the 24 ASTC segments are hand sewn together during installation on the aft skirt.

When looking at the circled detail of this photo, I immediately recalled, because it's strangely wrapped on many photos, as one can see here.

Here one can detect a little bit more,

and here one can see it under the SRB Aft Skirt,

in direct contact with the above circled interface, and both parts are like chalk and cheese.

If I did not have you, Becky!

But nevertheless the question remains, what these equipments were used for?

Maybe dhanners can help?

I'll do some research, but my guess is the panel has some sort of receptacles for ground-test equipment, or some sort of umbilical connection to the pad. The aft skirts are actually chock full of various gizmos.

GSE testing leads or part of the ignition sequencer would be my guesses. But they're ON LY guesses!

Thanks Becky and David,

I also think, that is a kind of umbilical interface, for whatever.

But before I start with this, I want to wait some time, because my friend Joe from the ARC Forum has offered his help to try to model this part in 1:144 for 3D printing.

These are the parts of the Airfix SRB & Aft Skirt,

and here is my little sketch of the Aft Skirt Thermal Curtain (ASTC), which is desribed in this interesting report SRB Thermal Curtain Design Support.

The ASTC is made up of twenty four segments, which are hand sewn together during installation on the aft skirt, what one can see here.

In this report there are some interesting drawings oft the ASTC, which might be helpful during 3D modeling of this detail.

That's why I'm thinking, that the segments should be more curved than in my friend Bill's 3D model (1:72), where they are more flat.

Source: shapeways.com (niParts)

In my opinion White Strong & Flexible should be a good choise for the 3D print.
Now I can only hope, that my friend Joe can come up with a good approach.

Thanks elliott for your good wishes, and also to you and your family Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
A girlfriend in our Raumcon forum has further decorated my MLP nicely.

Now Santa Claus can come ...

which are hand sewn together during installation on the aft skirt,

"Hand sewn" are words I never would have thought of in relation to SRB's!

Merry Christmas!

It's kind of akin to the bathtub caulk used to glue on the Orbiter's thermal protection tiles....
