If Space X can accomplish landing the Dragon 2 anywhere a helicopter can land, then Elon Musk has placed himself in the history books for sure.

Just adding my two eurocents to this thread.
I think Musk and SpaceX is what NASA cannot longer achieve. NASA lacks the inventive atmosphere and became a slow, top heavy, monster. This already started in the seventies. No place for 'SCE to AUX - guys' and Houbolt- types anymore.
These are the types now to be found at SpaceX. That's why and how they managed to become a major player in just ten years time. Short lines from top to bottom, young people and anything but a bureaucratic workspace.

I am so hugely curious in how the Dragon v.2 (what happened to the moniker Dragon Rider?) will behave on a landing course. This truly is something looking forward seeing happening. The first real space innovation in, say, thirty years.

launching shuttle type vehicles from planes seems to be the least expensive way. I know it costs more for all the monitoring teams during the glide return, maybe one of those rocky jones type vtol rocket ships would be best!

I can appreciate all the enthusiasm, but right now it's still just a paper spacecraft. It's going to take a LOT of work to qualify the Dragon 2 for human spaceflight, especially the powered descent mode.

Just my .02 USD.

Maybe some sort of copyright issue with Anne McCaffrey?

There is a need for a replacement vehicle for the Space Shuttle. If this one works, great. Looks like it could.

Does Dragon V.2 have parachutes in case the descent rockets malfunction? And I'm no rocket scientist, but it seems like a powered, controlled descent is going to use a heck of a lot fuel. Where is it stored?

Then again Elon Musk and his people have designed, flown, and returned more spacecraft than I ever will.

From a purely aesthetic standpoint, the four fins on the new trunk look like something out of a 1950's sci-fi movie.

I'm wondering when we'll get a model update from Alfonso....
