Parts 49 and 50 form the Replacement / Spare Primary Canister. They are a simple short tube with a flat cap. Be sure to orient the cap on the tube using the red alignment arrows.

Parts 51a and 51b form the Ascent Stage Engine Cover. They are "hidden" on sheet 19. They are a simple short tube with a flat cap that has a couple tabs sticking out the side. Be sure to orient the cap on the tube using the red alignment arrows.

The canister is then atached to the side of the engine cover. Use the white attachment points with the little blue box to set the proper position.

Part 52 is the LGC Control that sits in the mid section on the floor in front of the Ascent Stage Engine Cover. It a rather complicated shape. Sort of a briefcase with a trianular side and two-angled bottom. The handle is very delicate and a bit difficult to cut and align cleanly. Not sure how the little tab next to the handle should be folded, so I just left it dangling for now. Perhaps later in the build once I install it in the mid section it may become more clear what to do with it.

Part 53 is the Suit Umbilical. It is a small control knob that attached on the wall next to the Left Hand Mid Section Stowage compartments. The pictures from UHU02's website are not very clear on how to form this part so I did the best I could after trying to make sense of the shape. It does not appear to close up into a complete part, but I may simply not understand the fold lines correctly.

Part 54 is the improvised filter carbon dioxide filter box from this mission. Nothing complicated there.

Now to install subassemblies into the mid section.

I first glued the Environmetal Control System onto the right wall using the white printing for alignment. I did it by applying glue to the edges of the ECS that would come into contact with the wall and the flap on the top of the ECS that attached to the wall near the hatch. After the glue dried I added a small bit of glue to the top of the upper brace arms to keep them in place. They kind of wedge into the top corner of the mid section.

The next subassembly to install was part 48 which goes under the ECS using the white printing on the floor of the mid section for positioning.

Next the Ascent Stage Engine Cover assembly was installed. Instead of applying the glue directly to the subassembly I decided to apply the glue to the floor of the mid section where the part would attach. I did this to minimize the glue stains in case I did not set the part down exactly where it needed to go. That way I could reposition it before the glue dried without smearing the printing ink. The ends of the two tabs off coming off the top of the cover attach to part 48.

Applying the glue to the mid section instead of the subassembly worked pretty good for the engine cover, so I used a similar technique for gluing the Left Hand Mid Section Stowage subassembly. The glue was applied to the white alignment printing on the wall. However, it got pretty dry before I was able to get the subassembly in place. Nevertheless, it did hold loosely at a few attachment points. To strengthen the bond, I carefully added some glue to the subassembly where the shelving butts up against the walls and held it in place until it was tacky enough to hold. It worked resonably well, but the extra fiddiling around with things caused one of the glue joints of part 15a to fail. I was able to reattach the joint without much incident. Disaster averted, but it was a good reminder of how delicate some of these part are.

Next I attached part 53 Suit Umbilical to the wall next to the stowage assembly.

Next in was part 52 LGC Control using the alignment marks on the floor of the mid section. No big concerns there except when trying to attach part 30 Water Control Module. It is very tight fit onto the wall under the ECS wedged next to the LGC Control. There are no alignment marks for this part so I had go to off the pictures from UHU02's build notes. It took some finessing to get it into place but in the end worked out okay.

Part 31 Film Magazine was glued to the floor using the alignment box.

The Coolant Regenerative Heat Exchanger (parts 45-47) was glued into place under the ECS.

Part 54 Filter Box was glued right into the face of the ECS. No alignment marks are there, but I used UHU02's build notes for positioning.

It is starting to get crowded in there! I have a bit of trouble opening the hatch because of the ECS. I can force it open but it puts lots of stress on the hinge. I don't know how many times it will take the stress, so I will have to resist the urge to open or close it unless necessary for the building process.

Since there were no additional parts used for installing these subassemblies into the mid section, the part count remains at 72.

The next step is to install the safety net. I cut out the template part 57 from page 3 and carefully cut some cheesecloth to make the net. However, when installing it I found it to be difficult to put in the proper location, and when I got it in place, it looked very sloppy, and detracted from the other equipment installed in the mid seciton. In the end, I decided to remove it and not to install the net at all.

With the decision not to install the net, the next step was to attach the back wall of the mid section (part 2 with all the attached subassemblies). I first applied glue to the inner wall seam only, placed the part in place, and stacked a dictionary on top of it for weight to make sure there were no gaps in the seam due to slight bends and warps of part 2. After drying, I followed up with spot gluing the various structural supports outside the cabin walls to hold them in place.

Although I decided not to install the net, I am adding the part to the part count. Thus the current part count is 73.

Parts 55a, 55b, and 56 are the umbillical oxygen hoses for the LM crew. Although the cross section of the round hoses will be flat, he part is folded in half so that printing will be on both sides and to add a bit of depth to the part. The part is folded along the dotted line and there is an crosshair mark to help with the gluing alighment.

After cutting out carefully, the hoses are have to be curved and bent to finesse into position. The glue attachment points for the ends of the hoses are not clearly marked. I used another reference guide to figure out where to attach them. 55a was attached to the two black dots on the face of part 1 with the other end attached to the two white dots on the bottom part of the neck of 23 Suit Isolation Valve (right valve). 55b was attached to the two round marks on the inner right wall of the midsection with the other end attached to the bottom part of the neck of 24 Suit Isolation Valve (left valve). One fork of 56 was attached to the port on the face of part 1 that has the star mark which corresponds with the printing on part 56. The other fork of 56 was attached to the inner right wall of the midsection just above the attachment of part 55b. The double hose end of part 56 was routed between parts 23 and 24 Suit Isolation Valves. This seemed to correspond with other source diagrams. The other single hose end was terminated onto the neck of 23 Suite Isolation Valve (right valve). I did not see this single hose anywhere on other source pictures, but it seemd to be the logical place to attach it.

Parts 58a through 58x (24 in all) are the formers for the tunnel. The entire row of parts is folded in half to have printing on both sides. Part 58a starts at the hinge position of the hatch then each subsequent former (58b, 58c, etc.) is added in a counterclockwise order when viewed from the top. I had to trim the formers very slightly to keep the top edges on the same plane in preparation for installing part 59.

Notice that parts 58l, 58m, and 58n have a notch that needs to be cut away before installation. From looking ahead at UHU02's build notes, this provides clearance for alignment tabs on the top inside edge of part 180d for when it is attached the LM face onto the mid section.

Part 59 is the exterior opening to the tunnel. The part has printing on the both sides of the left and right "wings". The one side with the extra brace sticking out has an alignment mark to help get it lined up well.

Parts 60a, 60b, and 60c form the tunnel wall. Part 60c is hidden on page 19. Part 60a is rolled into a tube with the printing on the inside. After forming the tube, part 60b is attached to the outside of the tube flush with one end. Be sure to glue it to the end of the tube that has similar riveting printed on it. I slid the tunnel wall into postion to help it to dry in a good round shape. I then glued part 60c in place while it was still in position. This helped to strentghen the part.

Part 59 was glued into place using the tunnel wall to make sure it was in the correct postion and aligned properly over the tunnel shaft. Make sure the antenna post is angled toward the front of the LM.

Next is the Ascent Module Engine. Part 61 is rolled into a tube. The top half of the tube is rolled twice to make the top half of the tube a bit larger diameter than the bottom half of the tube.

Parts 64 and 65 form the inner surface of the engine bell. Since paper modeling is a bit new for me, I was having quite a strugle getting them perfectly round in order for them to mate together properly without tabs. After finally getting them together, part 63 was folded in half for printing on both sides. It was then attached to the top of the cone. This also helped to keep the engine bell nice and round.

I then attached part 61 to the top of this structure.

Parts 66 through 68 form the outer surface of the engine bell. The circumfrence of part 66 was a bit to big so I trimmed a portion of it so it would be tight and flush around the bottom edge of the engine bell. However, part 67 was very tight. With a but of strongarming, I was able to get it into place butting against part 66. Part 68 was the tightest of all. It would not slide all the way down the side of the engine bell, so I ended up with a compromise of gluing it just above part 67. It actually ended up looking pretty good to my eye. I then added part 62 once this assembly was completed.
